Pocket Planes sets course for Google Play

Pocket Planes, the adorable pixelated successor to Tiny Tower, found its way to Android over the weekend. Instead of building a massive self-sustaining skyscraper, players build out an airline, complete with a wide variety of aircraft, destinations, goods, and passengers to deliver. There are sets of missions that change regularly, and players that contribute deliveries to them are listed on worldwide leaderboards, as well as smaller ones in flight groups with your friends. 

I've played a fair bit of Pocket Planes on iOS, and it's a ton of fun, especially if you found that Tiny Tower lacked depth or complexity. The game is free, with the support of in-app purchases for accelerated progress on a handful of fronts. The Game maintains the charm of Tiny Tower, and puts a fresh twist on it.

Any Tiny Tower players in the house interested in giving this game a shot? Any other good business simulation games out there? The only other ones that really come to mind are Order Up!! To Go and the endless tide of Kairosoft titles like Game Dev Story.

Obama makes fresh push on economy in key states

BOSTON (AP) ? Sensing an opening on the economy, President Barack Obama launched an aggressive new effort Saturday to convince voters in the most competitive states that Republican rival Mitt Romney is risky for the nation's recovery with a plan that caters to multimillionaires over the middle class.

"They want to go back to the same old policies that got us in trouble in the first place," former President Bill Clinton is shown saying in the 60-second TV ad set to run in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, and Virginia.

"We're not going back, we are moving forward," Obama adds in the commercial.

Romney doesn't agree, and says the U.S. is not better off after nearly four years of Obama's leadership of a nation with the unemployment rate stubbornly stuck around 8 percent.

The new Obama push, coupled with ads this past week by both candidates squaring off over China's impact on the U.S. economy, comes seven weeks before Election Day, and as polls point to modest gains for the president following the national political conventions. Both campaigns say they expect the race to be decided by eight or nine states.

Romney, a former business executive who argues that only he can fix the sluggish economy, was taking Saturday off from campaigning. He was trying to refocus his campaign on the economy after a difficult week dominated by foreign policy, a vulnerability, in the wake of unrest at U.S. embassies.

At the same time, Romney is working to reassure concerned conservatives that he has a winning strategy that relies partly on strong performances at next month's debates. He also was finalizing plans to make an aggressive push to try to narrow Obama's advantage among women and Hispanics.

The president was in Washington this weekend keeping tabs on the situation in the Middle East following the deaths of a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans. While he, too, had no plans to campaign this weekend, he also was keeping his eye on winning a second term.

The ad, 60 seconds long and airing in seven states, is an expensive and expansive effort by Obama to gain the upper hand on the economy, Romney's strength, at a time when voters are reporting feeling slightly more optimistic that the president's policies are helping.

Polls in several of the most contested states show the president with a slight edge. Also, a new national survey by The New York Times and CBS News finds that Romney has lost his longstanding edge on the question of who voters view as most likely to restore the economy and create jobs. Despite that, the poll found the race narrowly divided.

Obama's new ad features snippets from both presidents' convention speeches and serves as a rebuttal to Romney's argument that the nation is not better off than it was four years ago. It highlights news reports from September 2008 that describe the "worst financial collapse since the Great Depression" and says that, since then, the country has seen 30 months of private-sector job growth resulting in 4.6 million new jobs.

It argues that Obama would ask "millionaires to pay a little more" ? it doesn't mention that would come through a tax increase ? while Romney wants "a new $250,000 tax break for multimillionaires."

"We're not there yet, but the real question is, whose plan is better for you?" the ad asks.

Expect to hear the same argument next week as Obama holds rallies in Ohio on Monday, a fundraiser in New York on Tuesday and a two-city Florida swing on Thursday. The president is also expected to campaign next weekend in Wisconsin, the home state of GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan and one that Romney is working to turn competitive.

Romney is set to campaign in Colorado on Sunday before Monday appearances in California and Texas. He'll spend Wednesday and Thursday campaigning in Florida.

Both candidates will appear separately at a forum this week hosted by the influential Hispanic television outlet Univision.

Romney aides acknowledge they're hoping for a shift away from foreign policy, which is not the longtime businessman's strength. While Romney tried to use the week's events to question Obama's global leadership, he drew criticism from Democrats and some Republicans for his initial response to violence in Libya.

For much of the week, the campaign-long struggle over the economy was shunted to the sidelines but not wholly suspended.

One day after Romney unveiled a television ad accusing Obama of "failing American workers" and ignoring unfair trade practices by China, the president's campaign responded in kind.

"He invested in firms that specialized in relocating jobs to low-wage countries like China," said the announcer in a commercial, referring to Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney founded.

"Even today, part of Romney's fortune is invested in China," the narrator added. "Romney's never stood up to China. All he's ever done is send them our jobs."

Biden, in Ohio tour, says it feels like home

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (AP) ? He buddied up with bikers, posed for countless pictures at a pizza place and downed an ice cream cone at a Dairy Queen.

Joe Biden loves Ohio.

The only question now is whether Ohio loves him ? and President Barack Obama.

The vice president toured the state by car over the weekend in a journey that was part campaign rally, part family road trip. Biden, accompanied by his sister, Valerie, and former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a longtime friend, said rural southern Ohio reminds him of northeastern Pennsylvania, where he grew up in Scranton.

"This is kind of like coming home," he told a crowd in Portsmouth, near the Kentucky state line. "I feel really comfortable here. I've been here a lot ? and I plan on coming back a lot."

Biden makes good on that promise Wednesday, when he campaigns in Dayton ? his third trip to Ohio in the past two weeks.

Biden's frequent visits underscore Ohio's role as a crucial battleground in the race for president. No Republican has won the presidency without winning Ohio, and Biden and Obama are doing everything they can to make sure the state's 18 electoral votes stay in the Democratic column.

Both Republicans and Democrats say internal surveys show a tight race in Ohio, with Obama narrowly ahead.

Biden's two-day tour through central and southern Ohio took him through parts of the state where Obama is faring the worst. Largely white and working class, towns such as Portsmouth and Zanesville were hit hard by the recession and have keenly felt the loss of manufacturing jobs in the past decade.

The Obama campaign believes Biden's middle-class roots and Everyman style fit rural Ohio, and they have tapped him as a top ambassador to working-class families.

In a fiery speech before about 500 people at Zane Grey Elementary, Biden accused Republican Mitt Romney of pursuing policies that would crush the auto industry and other manufacturers.

"Do the folks in Ohio really think that Gov. Romney, with his views on outsourcing, with his views on General Motors and Chrysler and beyond that, do they honestly believe that if he had been president the last four years that today, that there would be today 115,000 auto jobs in Ohio?" Biden said at the school in Zanesville, a town which won brief fame last year as the place where lions and tigers were released from private cages and then killed. Zanesville is about 55 miles east of Columbus.

While his speeches were filled with attacks against Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, Biden also took time to make a more informal connection with Ohio voters, as he stopped ? sometimes for more than an hour at a time ? at restaurants and a local campaign office.

His visit to a Seaman, Ohio, diner instantly became a famous campaign moment, after an Associated Press photo of Biden cozying up with a female biker went viral. At that stop and others, Biden hugged supporters, joked about interrupting their meals and listened intently as Ohioans told him their stories.

He declined no photo requests through two full days ? and always there was a search for connection.

"Where'd you live in Delaware? Newark? You're kidding me!" he told a voter in Chillicothe, in southern Ohio. "I'm glad you know what team you're on. I'm on your team."

Biden was speaking to the man by cellphone after he grabbed it from a campaign volunteer who was making calls as part of a "weekend of action" to round up support for Democrats in Ohio's coal country.

Biden initially was talking to the man's wife, but demanded to speak to her husband after learning he was originally from Delaware. Biden, a former Delaware senator, had an animated conversation as a roomful of reporters and campaign volunteers looked on.

Minutes later, the man, Jack Woods, showed up at the campaign office ? just as Biden had requested.

"He knew me when," Biden said as he and Woods posed for a picture.

Earlier, during a visit to a pizza parlor in Jackson, Ohio, Biden faced a tougher crowd.

"All you wanted was a quiet dinner and the vice president shows up," he said to no one in particular as he entered Cardo's Pizza. The restaurant's customers were friendly to Biden and some posed for pictures with him. But many at the restaurant in the heavily Republican area said they had no plans to vote for Obama and Biden.

The store's owner, John Moore, a father of four who has owned Cardo's for 23 years, politely chatted with Biden, but said later that he does not support the Democratic ticket. Moore opposes abortion.

Moore quipped about the VP's visit: "Someone asked me if this happens every Saturday night. I said: 'World leaders come here every Saturday night.'"

Sydney Humphreys, an 11-year-old cheerleader who was eating dinner with her family, said "it was pretty cool" to meet the vice president. But she, too, said she is not a supporter. She's a Romney fan.

Biden took little notice of his hosts' political leanings, hugging or high-fiving nearly everyone he saw after four formal campaign speeches and an equal number of informal stops. He frequently noted red-clad Ohio State Buckeye fans, out in force on a football Saturday.

Chatting with a football coach in Jackson, Biden said: "The most exciting night of my life was Friday night. That's when I'd play ball."

Cathy Pool, 48, of Chillicothe, sporting a red Ohio State T-shirt, told Biden that she and her partner of nearly 25 years, Mendy Yates, were celebrating their anniversary this year. Ohio law prohibits them from marrying, but Biden told Pool, "It's going to happen."

Biden's words "meant everything in the world to me," said Pool, a nurse who started volunteering for Obama a month ago after Romney visited Chillicothe. "It's nice to be acknowledged."

While crowds at Biden's speeches were small ? he spoke to fewer than 2,600 people over two days ? they were enthusiastic.

Strickland, the former governor, traveled with Biden all weekend and introduced him at all four speeches.

Obama doesn't have to win southern Ohio for the intense effort here to pay off, Strickland said. "If we can increase the percentage (of the Obama vote) from 39 percent to 43 percent, that may be enough" to win the state, he said.

The winner in Ohio, he said, is likely to be the winner nationwide.

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues have published a study describing the greater difficulty in finding matched, unrelated donors for non-Caucasian patients who are candidates for hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT).

The study appeared in the August issue of Bone Marrow Transplantation.

The success of HCT depends on finding cell donors who are closely matched genetically; as the degree of mismatching increases, the success of unrelated donor HCT falls accordingly. A patient's ideal donor is a genetically matched sibling.

The search for a perfectly matched donor for all groups takes time and affects the progression to transplantation. The National Marrow Donor Program estimates that the genetically matched donor rate is 90 percent for Caucasian patients, 70 percent for Hispanics and Asians, and 60 percent for those of African ancestry.

"Using unrelated adult donors to facilitate HCT has provided major opportunities for patients without a matched sibling donor. In fact, the rate of unrelated donors now exceeds the rate of related donor HCT," said Joseph Pidala, M.D., M.S., assistant member of Moffitt's Blood & Marrow Transplant Department and a member of the Immunology Program. "Using data available at Moffitt, we sought to describe the determinants of a successful, unrelated donor search and to explore the contribution of donor identification versus patient characteristics leading to successful transplantation outcome."

According to Pidala, many patients can achieve prolonged, condition-free survival after unrelated donor HCT. There is, however, a need to understand "modifiable factors" that limit access to unrelated donor HCT.

The researchers concluded that the difficulties in finding well-matched donors in some minority groups were likely related to the degree of genetic heterogeneity within those groups, as well as their underrepresentation in donor pools.

They concluded that when compared to Caucasians, African-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans have greater difficulty in finding a suitably matched unrelated donor, and less likelihood of successfully reaching HCT. Other barriers to HCT include age and disease progression.

"This research speaks to the need for reducing the time from HCT consultation to donor identification and HCT," Pidala said. "Survival benefit for HCT is dependent upon finding a suitable donor in a timely manner and addressing modifiable barriers to reaching HCT."

"Our data are consistent with the expectation that if suitable unrelated donors could be more expeditiously identified, patient outcomes would improve, particularly for racial and ethnic minorities and for patients with better performance status," concluded Pidala and his colleagues. "Increased representation of ethnic minorities within unrelated donor registries will increase the likelihood of finding a suitable donor."

Another sign of zebra mussels' proliferation - TwinCities.com

Not long ago, a dive buddy phoned Rich Rezanka with troubling news.

He had been scuba diving in Lake Ore-Be-Gone on the Iron Range and spotted what he thought might be zebra mussels.

Any sighting of the invasive mussel is troubling, but this one even more so. Zebes, as we're now calling them, hadn't been spotted inland this far north, and Lake Ore-Be-Gone, formally known as the Gilbert Pit, is a former mine pit with clear, alkaline water -- not the type of water generally hospitable to zebes. And it's not connected to any other infested water.

Rezanka, an invasive species specialist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and another DNR diver checked out the lake last month.

"We were underwater for 20 minutes before we found anything, but sure enough, there they were," Rezanka said. "It wasn't like they were carpeting the bottom, but they were there."

And so on Aug. 28, the "Gilbert Pit (Lake Ore-Be-Gone)" was added to the list of waters infested with one of the most feared invaders. Zebra mussels can proliferate rapidly, crowding out native mussels and filtering so much plankton that they fundamentally alter the chemistry of a lake and threaten to upset the entire food chain.

One more thing: The lake has no cabins. No boat lifts, no private docks. If zebra mussels were there, it wasn't a case of a lakefront property owner transporting a boat lift without cleaning and drying it first, a scenario that was traced to two infestations last

year.

No, this would have to be the scenario all boaters and recreational day users fear: One of the masses unwittingly brought the invaders. Perhaps someone failed to heed state laws requiring a boat's live well to be drained after boating in Lake Superior or some other infested water. Perhaps even a diver didn't properly dry his wet suit and offered a mussel larva a ride, a scenario I had not considered but one that Rezanka said is possible.

Bottom line: In the parlance of aquatic invasive species biologists, the infestation of Lake Ore-Be-Gone was "overland transport."

It's unclear how often this happens, but the DNR is trying to figure that out.

"One of the things we want to see is, 'Are we having an impact with our awareness campaigns and enforcement and new laws?' " said Ann Pierce, the DNR's acting invasive species program supervisor. "We're looking through our data now, looking for those infestations that are clearly the result of overland transport, because those are the ones we're really trying to reduce, ideally, to zero."

The official list of infested waters on the DNR's website fills more than three pages. But many of those waters are connected; some are nothing more than a widening of a river that carries a separate name on a map. In reality, the number of distinct waters is closer to two dozen.

Often, when a "new" infestation is declared, it's merely confirmation of the zebes spreading throughout a watershed, something that probably was bound to happen naturally.

In 2010 and 2011, there were about eight new infestations. How many were overland transport?

"Probably three each year," Pierce said, cautioning that her analysis of those two years isn't final. The plan is to examine data since the state first started collecting it in 1989 with the infestation of Lake Superior.

"The hope is that the number of infestations from overland transport is reduced every year," Pierce said. "If you really want to show this as a trend, you need to be analyzing as many years as you can."

Still, she acknowledges, these are small numbers, and calling anything a trend with such a small sample is tricky.

The only other measuring stick the DNR has now is compliance with laws, as sampled by roadside checks and boat launch inspections. This appears to be improving; this year's boating season started with about a 20 percent violation rate, and officials now report closer to 16 percent.

But we don't know whether an increase in compliance --or all the tickets boaters are being issued -- is having a difference in the rate we're spreading zebes.

One last thing: The zebes Rezanka found -- all of which were near a boat launch on Lake Ore-Be-Gone -- were all from the same year class, and old, in zebe-years at least.

"We didn't extensively survey the whole pit, but we didn't see any 1- to 2-year-olds or young of the year," he said. "Based on their size, they've been there for several years."

That complicates data for Pierce. The lake will be declared infested in 2012, but the infestation probably took place several years earlier.

The good news is that it's possible that the lake's alkalinity won't support zebra mussels or that there simply aren't enough of them for a breeding population. In either case, zebes could soon be gone from Lake Ore-Be-Gone.

The bad news is this means zebes were in the Gilbert area for years before anyone noticed or checked their equipment with extra care. Which means they could be in other lakes.

"I'm sure they are," Rezanka said.
