Game graphics to be ?indistinguishable from reality? | Lazygamer ...

SW1313

There?s a new M-rated Star Wars game coming. Unveiled at this year?s E3, Star Wars 1313 brings the series back to core gamers ? with recent Star Wars titles giving that demographic a skip. It?s looking pretty incredible ? with many wondering if its destined for next-gen systems. Much of that visual fidelity comes from CG wizards? Industrial Light and Magic, Lucasfilm?s film effects studio. On the evolution of game graphics, ILM has predicted that in 10 years, games will be ?indistinguishable from reality.?

Star Wars 1313, features a cinematic aesthetic, punctuated with fluid motion capture and strong vocal work ? but it?s a far cry from being anywhere near photorealstic. Industrial Light & Magic?s Kim Libreri thinks it won?t be too long until that happens.

??The way its going,? he said in a video interview with CVG, ?it?s gonna be pretty hard to tell the difference between something that is interactive and rendered in real-time, and something that was done for an animated TV show, or even a live action thing.?

Graphics technology has evolved at such a rapid rate, that he believes that a decade from now, it?ll have sufficiently advanced to provide photorealism.

?we?re matching the quality of an animated movie seven or eight years ago, and another ten years from now, it?s just going to be indistinguishable from reality.?

Photorealism in games seems to be a popular topic right now. Last week, 2K games boss Christopher Hartmann said that he believes gaming as a medium won?t change much until photorealism in games is possible.

?To dramatically change the industry to where we can insert a whole range of emotions, I feel it will only happen when we reach the point that games are photorealistic; then we will have reached an endpoint and that might be the final console,? he said.
