DNP Toshiba launches Canvio Personal Cloud, networkattached storage with iOS and Android apps

It's been a few years now that Toshiba's been making portable hard drives, so it makes sense that the company would want to venture into larger disks as a next step. Indeed, the company just took the wraps off Canvio Personal Cloud, its first network-attached storage product. The drive itself will be offered in two flavors -- 2TB and 3TB -- but the hook, of course, is that you can use various apps to upload your files and then access them remotely. These applications include desktop software, as well as mobile apps for iOS and Android. In either case, the applications are designed to upload music, video, photos and documents, and all of this content is searchable by date and other filters. The drive will be available sometime next month, starting at $220 for the 2TB version and going up to $250 for 3TB. If you're curious, we've got hands-on photos of the UI past the break.

Everything You Need To Know About Video Gaming | The best junk ...

August 29, 2012 admin Uncategorized

?

?

Video gaming is not without its faults. You will gain advice from the article below that will help you make the most of the time you spend gaming. Keep reading to learn more.

Before you start buying games that you think your kids will enjoy, try renting them beforehand. Games can be expensive and are often non-returnable, so you will want to purchase one that your child wants. Video game rentals help you get a good feel for the game, without costing you too much for trial and error.

Drink enough water during long video game sessions?don?t get dehydrated. Video games are a lot of fun, but you may become so interested in the game that you don?t take care of yourself. Dehydration can be a major health risk, so be sure you stay properly hydrated while you play your video games.

Games that are difficult are very challenging, and you should not become frustrated with them. Try playing again later, once you are more relaxed and perhaps can look at the problem you have to resolved in a different way. The objective of any game is having fun, so remember to relax!

You can have a lot of fun by playing some older classic games like flv to mov mac. Another advantage of this is that you will save a lot of money if you are able to find the game. Some of them can be bought for practically nothing online.

Stop and stretch your muscles when you are playing video games 4 times an hour. You will tend to get repetitive motion injuries playing video games if you don?t stretch. Your muscles need to be properly stretched to avoid cramping and formation of blood clots. It?s the healthy thing to do.

Checking a game out from the library lets you try it before you spend your money on it. They usually have an assortment to try. Call your library or check their website to find out which video games they have.

You need to utilize the settings regarding parental control. Check to see if you can play the game online. If so, limit how much access your kids have to the Internet. Also, keep close tabs on their friend request and monitor their play.

If you are out of shape and want an easy way to get some exercise, consider purchasing a Wii console. The Wii works with your own body movements and has an array of games that incorporate fitness.

If you want to buy a hot new game, make sure you reserve it at the store in advance, rather than waiting for a general release date. Many games these days have what is called a ?pre-order bonus,? which is an item given to those who order the game early. For example, you might be awarded character options and features that are not available to those who purchase the game after the release date.

If you buy used games, you need an adequate disc-cleaning kit. You never know what sort of shape your game will be in when you do this. These kits can help you restore your games to working condition, even if they used to be really grungy. It is a good idea to look at several cleaning disc options. Many kits are available in stores today.

Always use a high grade video connector when setting up your video game system. Consoles come with different cables to use to connect to the display of your choice. What cables are you to use for the best gaming experience? Whenever you can, use DVI or HDMI to get the highest grade of signal and clarity in your display. After them, the best are S-Video, Composite, and RCA. Coaxial connections are the most common connector; however, they are also the lowest quality. Only use it if you don?t have a choice.

Going online is a fun way to get to know other video gamers. Playing video games may be antisocial, so be sure to make time to socialize with other gamers online. Join an online forum so you can share tips and talk about your favorite games.

Keep the computer you?re on clear and make sure everything is up-to-date. If you game often on a particular system, avoid installing too many applications. You also need to run certain maintenance programs like Defrag and ScanDisk. This will keep your system running at peak performance.

Who needs to sleep when you are having fun? Most gamers use this myth as an excuse to play as much as possible. This is nonsense! A person needs a full 8 hours to keep their body healthy.

Be sure to thoroughly check a video game?s rating before letting little kids have it. The most violent, profane or sexual video games come with a rating of M or A. Do not let your children play these games or watch while you play. Violent or otherwise inappropriate video games can result in behavior changes or nightmares in children.

Are you struggling to find which console is the best for your needs? Think about what you like in a gaming system and find the console that best suits your needs. Hit the Internet to do some research. Check out reviews from other gamers, too. become informed before buying a console.

Video games can change your life for the better. You can also learn lots of new things as well as being a winner at whatever game you are playing! Whatever types of video games you enjoy playing, use the things you?ve learned here to help you have a more quality experience while gaming.

Little Evidence on Value of Treatments for Autism: Report - - Health ...

TUESDAY, Aug. 28 (HealthDay News) ? There is just not enough evidence to determine whether or not current treatments actually help adolescents and young adults with autism, researchers report.

?Overall, there is very little evidence in all areas of care for adolescents and young adults with autism, and it is urgent that more rigorous studies be developed and conducted,? report senior author Melissa McPheeters, director of Vanderbilt University?s Evidence-Based Practice Center, said in a university news release.

Her team reviewed 32 studies published between 1980 and 2011 on therapies for people aged 13 to 30 with autism.

They found some evidence that treatments might boost social skills and educational outcomes such as vocabulary and reading, but the studies were generally small and had limited follow-up.

There was little evidence supporting the use of drug therapy for people with autism in these age groups. The most consistent findings showed that antipsychotic medications might lessen problem behaviors such as irritability and aggression. However, harmful side effects linked to these medications included weight gain and sedation.

Only five studies tested interventions involving work skills training for young people with autism. All of the studies suggested that vocational interventions may be effective for some adolescents and young adults with autism, but the studies also had significant flaws that raised questions about their conclusions.

One expert said the paucity of data on this topic is disheartening.

?Only five studies that address vocation skills were published in the last three decades, and all were of poor quality,? said Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer at the advocacy group Autism Speaks. However, ?the meager evidence that exists suggests that vocational interventions improve rates of employment, reduce autism symptoms, and [improve] quality of life.?

She said more and better data is needed. ?Given the huge number of adolescents [with autism] who will be entering adulthood in the next several years, it is crucial that we address this knowledge gap,? Dawson said. ?There is a great need for research to identify the most effective strategies for helping young people with autism navigate the transition to adulthood successfully.?

Autism rates are rising, but much remains to be discovered about treatments, added the researchers, whose review was published by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The findings about vocational interventions were published separately in the Aug. 27 issue of the journal Pediatrics.

?There are growing numbers of adolescents and adults with autism in need of substantial support. Without a stronger evidence base, it is very hard to know which interventions will yield the most meaningful outcomes for individuals with autism and their families,? Zachary Warren, director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center?s Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders, said in the news release.

Your website?s ranking on search engines is a vital element of your overall marketing campaign, and there are ways to improve your link popularity through legitimate methods. Unfortunately, the Internet is populated by bands of dishonest webmasters seeking to improve their link popularity by faking out search engines.

The good news is that search engines have figured this out, and are now on guard for ?spam? pages and sites that have increased their rankings by artificial methods. When a search engines tracks down such a site, that site is demoted in ranking or completely removed from the search engine?s index.

The bad news is that some high quality, completely above-board sites are being mistaken for these web page criminals. Your page may be in danger of being caught up in the ?spam? net and tossed from a search engine?s index, even though you have done nothing to deserve such harsh treatment. But there are things you can do ? and things you should be sure NOT to do ? which will prevent this kind of misperception.

Link popularity is mostly based on the quality of sites you are linked to. Google pioneered this criteria for assigning website ranking, and virtually all search engines on the Internet now use it. There are legitimate ways to go about increasing your link popularity, but at the same time, you must be scrupulously careful about which sites you choose to link to. Google frequently imposes penalties on sites that have linked to other sites solely for the purpose of artificially boosting their link popularity. They have actually labeled these links ?bad neighborhoods.?

You can raise a toast to the fact that you cannot be penalized when a bad neighborhood links to your site; penalty happens only when you are the one sending out the link to a bad neighborhood. But you must check, and double-check, all the links that are active on your links page to make sure you haven?t linked to a bad neighborhood.

The first thing to check out is whether or not the pages you have linked to have been penalized. The most direct way to do this is to download the Google toolbar at http://toolbar.google.com. You will then see that most pages are given a ?Pagerank? which is represented by a sliding green scale on the Google toolbar.

Do not link to any site that shows no green at all on the scale. This is especially important when the scale is completely gray. It is more than likely that these pages have been penalized. If you are linked to these pages, you may catch their penalty, and like the flu, it may be difficult to recover from the infection.

There is no need to be afraid of linking to sites whose scale shows only a tiny sliver of green on their scale.

These sites have not been penalized, and their links may grow in value and popularity. However, do make sure that you closely monitor these kind of links to ascertain that at some point they do not sustain a penalty once you have linked up to them from your links page.

Another evil trick that illicit webmasters use to artificially boost their link popularity is the use of hidden text. Search engines usually use the words on web pages as a factor in forming their rankings, which means that if the text on your page contains your keywords, you have more of an opportunity to increase your search engine ranking than a page that does not contain text inclusive of keywords.

Some webmasters have gotten around this formula by hiding their keywords in such a way so that they are invisible to any visitors to their site. For example, they have used the keywords but made them the same color as the background color of the page, such as a plethora of white keywords on a white background. You cannot see these words with the human eye ? but the eye of search engine spider can spot them easily! A spider is the program search engines use to index web pages, and when it sees these invisible words, it goes back and boosts that page?s link ranking.

Webmasters may be brilliant and sometimes devious, but search engines have figured these tricks out. As soon as a search engine perceive the use of hidden text ? splat! the page is penalized.

The downside of this is that sometimes the spider is a bit overzealous and will penalize a page by mistake. For example, if the background color of your page is gray, and you have placed gray text inside a black box, the spider will only take note of the gray text and assume you are employing hidden text. To avoid any risk of false penalty, simply direct your webmaster not to assign the same color to text as the background color of the page ? ever!

Another potential problem that can result in a penalty is called ?keyword stuffing.? It is important to have your keywords appear in the text on your page, but sometimes you can go a little overboard in your enthusiasm to please those spiders. A search engine uses what is called ?Keyphrase Density? to determine if a site is trying to artificially boost their ranking. This is the ratio of keywords to the rest of the words on the page. Search engines assign a limit to the number of times you can use a keyword before it decides you have overdone it and penalizes your site.

This ratio is quite high, so it is difficult to surpass without sounding as if you are stuttering ? unless your keyword is part of your company name. If this is the case, it is easy for keyword density to soar. So, if your keyword is ?renters insurance,? be sure you don?t use this phrase in every sentence. Carefully edit the text on your site so that the copy flows naturally and the keyword is not repeated incessantly. A good rule of thumb is your keyword should never appear in more than half the sentences on the page.

The final potential risk factor is known as ?cloaking.? To those of you who are diligent Trekkies, this concept should be easy to understand. For the rest of you?cloaking is when the server directs a visitor to one page and a search engine spider to a different page. The page the spider sees is ?cloaked? because it is invisible to regular traffic, and deliberately set-up to raise the site?s search engine ranking. A cloaked page tries to feed the spider everything it needs to rocket that page?s ranking to the top of the list.

It is natural that search engines have responded to this act of deception with extreme enmity, imposing steep penalties on these sites. The problem on your end is that sometimes pages are cloaked for legitimate reasons, such as prevention against the theft of code, often referred to as ?pagejacking.? This kind of shielding is unnecessary these days due to the use of ?off page? elements, such as link popularity, that cannot be stolen.

To be on the safe side, be sure that your webmaster is aware that absolutely no cloaking is acceptable. Make sure the webmaster understands that cloaking of any kind will put your website at great risk.

Just as you must be diligent in increasing your link popularity and your ranking, you must be equally diligent to avoid being unfairly penalized. So be sure to monitor your site closely and avoid any appearance of artificially boosting your rankings.

Water Conservation And Plumbing Issues - IdeaMarketers.com

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, our team is committed to helping every household conserve water and be aware of drain or piping issues. As a homeowner, it is extremely important to be aware of signs of clogs, damaged pipes or other plumbing issues. It is also important to have knowledge on ways to conserve water and save money.

As experienced plumbers, we want to share our knowledge and a few tips with you to help prevent future plumbing problems and assist you in conserving water.

Shower

1. Are you noticing a foul odor in your shower stall? If so, the issue may be a leaking drain pipe. A foul odor can mean a number of issues; however it is extremely important that you have it checked out by a professional.

2. If you are dealing with a slow shower drain it would be a good idea to invest in a small shower snake. Using a small shower snake to unclog tough build-up in your drain may be more helpful than using a liquid drain cleaner. To prevent build-up in your shower drain, you can try replacing your shower strainer with a strainer that collects excess hair before it travels into the drain. Also, be sure to collect any hair that is found on the strainer after every shower.

3. Try replacing your old shower head with a new one as this can help you conserve water and help you save money.

Household Appliance

1. Have you noticed that there is a bit of water left in your dishwasher after every wash? This water prevents your dishes from burning while they are being dried. However, if you notice excess water in your unit after a wash, there is a chance that your drain may be clogged and should be examined by a professional.

Mr. Rooter Plumbing is available 24/7 to answer any questions you may have and to provide you with the assistance that you need. Please give us a call for more water conserving tips and plumbing precautions to follow.

A meeting a decade ago sets Romney's path

BOSTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney may not have set out on the road to the Republican presidential nomination if not for a private meeting between strangers.

More than a decade ago, the 54-year-old Olympics CEO was at a crossroads as the closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Games approached. That's when Kerry Healey, head of the Massachusetts GOP, traveled across the country to meet with Romney. Inside the privacy of his office, Healey pressed the longtime businessman to run for governor. French figure skating judges waited outside as the meeting ran long.

"We had never met before. It was a cold call," Healey recalls.

Romney would soon agree to run, a decision that opened the next phase of his life.

Nine months after that February 2002 meeting, Romney was elected governor of Massachusetts. The post became the launching pad for a national political career that reaches its pinnacle Thursday when he accepts the Republican presidential nomination.

Those who know him well say it was not ambition that pushed Romney into politics anew after a failed 1994 Massachusetts Senate run. Instead, they describe a man driven to lead, likely the result of growing up in a family that emphasized service above all else. They say Romney truly believed in his own unique ability to solve problems.

He ran toward challenges, says longtime friend and business partner Bob White.

"A lot of people who just tuned in this presidential year haven't seen this history of stepping forward," White says. "It's that stepping forward that his parents talked about, not necessarily just public office. It how he's wired."

Indeed, Romney's father, George Romney, served as Michigan governor. He unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in 1968, later becoming a member of President Richard Nixon's Cabinet. Romney's mother, Lenore, later was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senate.

It was clear early into Romney's one term as Massachusetts governor that he, like his father, saw opportunities to lead on a larger stage.

Less than a year after taking office, Romney sought and won the chairmanship of the Republican Governors Association. He raised tens of millions of dollars to help elect Republicans across the nation. In 2005, he made his first trip to Iowa, home of the leadoff presidential caucuses, to speak at the state GOP's fall banquet some weeks before President George W. Bush's re-election.

Romney would visit Iowa three times in 2005 and nine times in 2006. That year, he spent 212 days outside of Massachusetts. One trip included a visit to Iraq and Afghanistan to enhance his international credentials as his state grappled with a devastating flood.

His national focus hurt his standing back home. The fall before he left office, two in three Massachusetts residents disapproved of his job performance.

But by that time, there was little doubt Romney would seek the presidency. He already had declined to seek a second term as governor. He announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee for the 2008 race on his next-to-last day as Massachusetts governor.

Romney quickly proved he was a prolific fundraiser and carved out a reputation that year as the conservative alternative to Sen. John McCain by shifting to the right on key issues after tacking more to the center as Massachusetts governor. He spent millions to win symbolic test votes and millions more to support a bloated staff.

Nearly always perfectly groomed and wearing a suit, Romney ended up struggling to connect with voters. His Mormon faith proved an impediment, especially in Iowa and South Carolina. And his reversals on social issues gave rivals fodder to tag him as a flip-flopping candidate with no core belief system.

Romney, who later acknowledged that his strategy was flawed, would ultimately lose the nomination to McCain.

Ann Romney vowed that her husband would not run a second time.

But feelings had changed around Christmas of 2010 when the Romney family met at the kitchen table to discuss the prospect of another bid.

"I said, 'Is it too late to fix the country? And Mitt said something interesting. He said, 'Well it is not too late yet, but it is getting late," Ann Romney told a Florida audience recently. "And knowing that there was still time, I said, 'There is no question whether we go forward or don't go forward, because it is up to you to save the country, and so we must go forward.'"

Romney was convinced he had to do things differently the second time around.

He worked to shed his buttoned-up image by wearing more casual attire, such as jeans, sneakers and shirts with the sleeves rolled up. Facing a weak Republican field, his campaign's rallying cry became "leaner and meaner." He hired a smaller staff and listened to fewer consultants. He stockpiled tons of cash and an outside super political action committee made up of former staffers did the same. He focused his pitch on the economy and defeating Barack Obama. And he walked a careful line between presenting himself as acceptable to the tea party ? a new insurgent group ? and catering to it.

Starting in Iowa, Romney and his allies eviscerated his rivals ? particularly former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ? on TV, burying them in negative ads. Romney was briefly announced the victor by a narrow margin before the Iowa GOP reversed course and declared former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum the winner. But by that point, Romney had cruised to victory in next-up New Hampshire. Gingrich then rose in South Carolina, shellacking Romney after casting him as a job-killer. Then came Florida, and Romney easily overtook the competition.

He clinched the nomination months later, then quickly set his sights on his next goal: defeating Obama.

Now Romney stands at the precipice of formally becoming the party's standard-bearer, and possibly the country's next president.

It's that image that first flashed in Healey's mind after her meeting with Romney a decade ago. By the time she left, Healey ? who would become Romney's lieutenant governor ? couldn't help but agree with the whispers that had already begun about his future.

Says Healey: "I had no doubt on my first meeting with him that he had the potential to be the president of the United States."

Prevent Diabetes Problems ? Be Sure That Your Skin And Feet Are ...

Approximately one fifth of diabetic Americans are hospitalized for foot-related issues at some point in their lives. Lots of signs of diabetic issues contribute to the risk of foot contamination. Diabetics commonly experience thick calluses which can easily damage as well as develop into abscess. An additional possible sign of diabetes is poor circulation which ? in turn ? impairs the body?s capability to heal, mend and fend off contamination. Diabetes can easily also cause neuropathy, severe nerve harm that restricts feeling in extremities. Because of nerve damage, a diabetic could not even feel the pain of an accident or contamination, permitting wounds to go unnoticed and hence get worse. When a wound is left neglected for too long, it could become contaminated. Health care therapy can easily include prescription antibiotics, a hospital stay, and ? in harsh scenarios ? amputation. The feet are particularly prone as they are often out of sight as well as tough to check out. For these several reasons, it is extremely importance that diabetics practice thoughtful, thorough foot care.

The complying with are highly recommended suggestions for keeping your feet happy as well as healthy and balanced!

Consistently wear proper diabetic footwears or slippers and NEVER walk around barefoot. Selecting the appropriate footwear is crucial to foot health as most diabetic foot traumas are the outcome of unsatisfactory fitting shoes. Footwears for diabetics should not be also tight or slender. They must be created from relaxed, breathable product as well as feature mesh vents to ventilate the footwears, lessening wetness, which tends to bred germs. Pair a high quality pair of diabetic footwears with seamless socks or squeezing stockings.

Frequently inspect your feet for any indication of calluses, sores, sores, or accidents. Make it a regular routine, possibly something you perform right after brushing your teeth and prior to bed. Usage a hand mirror to check out those hard-to-see locations. If that doesn?t function, have a relative inspect your feet for you.

Wash your feet every day and after strenuous physical exercise or activity. Usage cleansing soap and hot water ? test the temperature with your elbow if you have trouble discerning the climate. Do NOT soak feet. Extended soaking may result in dry, fractured skin.

After cleaning your feet, make use of an emery board carefully file down calluses. Do not over-file as that may result in sores as well as blood loss ? which is exactly just what you are attempting to avoid.

Usage a light coating of lotion after you clean as well as file. Beware not to slather on cream or allow it to trap in between the toes as this develops an excellent atmosphere for bacteria to reproduce. Massage in the cream until it is absolutely absorbed.

Cut your nails as needed. Most individuals find as soon as a week or every other week functions best. Fashion the nail to the shape of your toes and beware to not trim them as well quick. Submit the edges to prevent snagging nails that can easily tear.

Never neglect foot problems of any kind of kind. If you uncover a cut, treat it instantly. If you see as of the following, contain your doctor promptly: welling up, cracks around the heel, calluses that hemorrhage, nail concerns, open sores, modifications in color of the skin, pain in your legs, or changes in skin climate.

See your medical doctor for a yearly foot check-up. Ask if they have any concerns or could recommend any sort of items for enhancing your foot care program.
Satisfy note that this report is for informative applications just and is not planned to identify or handle any health care condition, or be taken as health-related advice. For even more info connected to your special circumstance, satisfy talk to your private physician.

Once again, we go back to the complications led to by neuropathy. When your feet are totally numb, you will definitely have no concept of exactly what you are strolling on, also something dangerous, unless you in fact make the effort to look. While not an ideal answer, diabetic slippers can easily assist safeguard you from walking on sharp items. For even more info on this subject attempt health

Kindergarten readiness: Are shy kids at an academic disadvantage?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Parents of young children hope for a successful kindergarten experience that will set their youngsters on the right path of their educational journey. Some worry about their kids not adapting to the school environment, particularly when the children are talkative and overactive. Yet, a new study by the University of Miami (UM) shows that overly shy preschool children are at greater academic risk than their chatty and boisterous peers.

The study is one of the first to follow the social and academic progress of children throughout the preschool year. The report shows that children displaying shy and withdrawn behavior early in the preschool year started out with the lowest academic skills and showed the slowest gains in academic learning skills across the year. The findings are published online, in advance of print, by the Journal of School Psychology.

"Everybody wants their children to be ready for kindergarten, to know their ABCs and to be able to count, but they sometimes don't understand that having social-emotional readiness is equally important," says Rebecca J. Bulotsky-Shearer, assistant professor of psychology at UM College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and principal investigator of the study.

Behavioral problems in the classroom arise when there is a gap between the child's developmental skills and the expectations of the school environment, according to the study. The findings suggest that children who are shy in the classroom have trouble engaging and learning.

"Preschool children who are very introverted tend to 'disappear within the classroom,'" says Elizabeth R. Bell, doctoral candidate in developmental psychology, at UM and co-author of the study. "It appears that while these children are not causing problems in the school, they are also not engaging in classroom activities and interactions, where almost all learning occurs during this age."

The results also raise the possibility that children who are loud and disruptive may be more likely to get the teacher's attention and benefit from specific educational strategies. "There are many classroom-based interventions for children that are disruptive and acting out in the classroom," says Bulotsky-Shearer. "I think the children who show an extreme amount of shyness and are withdrawn are most at risk of getting missed."

The researcher hopes the new findings encourage the development of appropriate classroom interventions tailored to the needs of different children, as well as appropriate training and professional development for teachers, to help them identify children who need help in specific areas. "This is especially important within early childhood programs such as Head Start, serving a diverse population of low-income children and families," says Bulotsky-Shearer.

The study analyzes information from 4, 417 prekindergarten children in the Head Start Program, ages 3 to 5, from a diverse population, living in a large urban district of the northeast. Six profile types were used to describe the preschoolers: 1.Well adjusted; 2. Adjusted with mild disengagement; 3.Moderately socially and academically disengaged; 4. Disruptive with peers; 5.Extremely socially and academically disruptive; 6.Extremely socially and academically disengaged.

The teachers assessed the emotional and behavioral characteristics, as well as the academic progress of each child, at three points in time during the preschool year. The findings show that older kids and girls tended to be better adjusted to the class, exhibited less behavioral problems, and had higher levels of social literacy, language and math skills.

The study is titled "Latent Profiles of Preschool Behavior within Learning, Peer, and Teacher Contexts: Identifying Subgroups of Children at Academic Risks across the Preschool Year." Ximena Dominguez, research social scientist, at SRI International is also a co-author of the study.

Romney accuses Obama of engaging in 'low' politics

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? His Republican National Convention curtailed by a threatened hurricane, Mitt Romney conceded Sunday that fresh controversy over rape and abortion is harming his party and he accused Democrats of trying to exploit it for political gain.

"It really is sad, isn't it, with all the issues that America faces, for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level," said Romney, struggling to sharpen the presidential election focus instead on a weak economy and 8.3 percent national unemployment.

His comments came as aides and party officials hurriedly rewrote the script for the convention, cut from four days to three because of the threat posed by approaching Tropical Storm Isaac. The storm is forecast to gain hurricane strength as it churns through the Gulf of Mexico but to pass well west of the convention city.

The revised schedule included a symbolic 10-minute session on Monday in a nearly empty hall, during which officials intend to launch a debt clock set to zero. The political objective is to show how much the government borrows throughout the convention week.

Officials did not rule out further changes because of the weather, and sidestepped when asked what might happen if, as seemed possible, the storm made landfall in the New Orleans area on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. That storm killed 1,800 people and devastated the city.

"We're 100 percent full steam ahead on Tuesday," said Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, expressing confidence the one-day delay would be the extent of the cancellations.

Despite concerns about the weather, a mammoth pre-convention celebration went on as planned Sunday night, attended by thousands of delegates and others who flocked to the Rays major league baseball stadium turned into a party venue in nearby St. Petersburg.

Priebus said Romney's nomination would take place on Tuesday, as would approval of a conservative party platform.

The former Massachusetts governor delivers his acceptance speech Thursday night before a prime time TV audience, then sets out on the final leg of a quest for the presidency that spans two campaigns and more than five years.

Polls make the race a close one, with a modest advantage for President Barack Obama.

For all the Republican attempts to make the election a referendum on the incumbent's handling of the economy, other events have intervened.

An incendiary comment more than a week ago by Rep. Todd Akin, the party's candidate for a Senate seat in Missouri, is among the intrusions. In an interview, he said a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy in the case of a "legitimate rape." The claim is unsupported by medical evidence, and the congressman quickly apologized.

Romney and other party officials, recognizing a political threat, unsuccessfully sought to persuade Akin to quit the race. Democrats have latched onto the controversy, noting not only what Akin said but also his opposition to abortion in all cases.

"Now, Akin's choice of words isn't the real issue here. The real issue is a Republican Party ? led by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan ? whose policies on women and their health are dangerously wrong," said a recent letter from Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic Party.

The party also posted a Web video that emphasizes the Republican Party's opposition to abortion and digitally alters the Republicans' "Romney-Ryan" logo to say "Romney Ryan Akin."

Interviewed on Fox, his comments broadcast on Sunday, Romney said the controversy over Akin "hurts our party and I think is damaging to women."

Romney spent the day in New Hampshire where he has a summer home. Aides said he was spending part of his afternoon practicing his convention speech with the use of a teleprompter.

Delegates marked time as the storm raked the Florida Keys to the south of the convention city en route to a projected landfall along the Gulf Coast.

"Somebody raised the prospect of marathon Monopoly. I favor the game Risk, but we'll see," said Tom Del Beccaro, chairman of the California delegation. I think people will just be ready for Tuesday and be pretty energetic then."

Hundreds of miles away, Romney said he was concerned for the safety of those who "are going to be affected" by the storm, which is predicted to worsen into a hurricane as it heads for landfall along the Gulf Coast.

In a presidential race defined by its closeness, Republican office-holders past and present said the party must find a way to appeal to women and Hispanics, and they said the economy was the way to do it.

"We have to point out that the unemployment rate among young women is now 16 percent, that the unemployment rate among Hispanics is very high, that jobs and the economy are more important, perhaps, than maybe other issues," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in 2008.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush agreed, saying that Romney "can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth." If he succeeds, "I think people will move back towards the Republican side," Bush added.

Obama leads Romney among women voters and by an overwhelming margin among Hispanics, but he trails substantially among men.

The result is a race that is unpredictably close, to be settled in a small number of battleground states.

An estimated $500 million has been spent on television commercials so far by the two candidates, their parties and supporting outside groups, nearly all of it in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada. Those states account for 100 electoral votes out of the 270 needed to win the White House.

Republicans have made no secret that they are eager to expand the electoral map to include Pennsylvania, Michigan, perhaps running mate Paul Ryan's Wisconsin and even Minnesota, states with 68 electoral votes combined.

All four are usually reliably Democratic in presidential campaigns. Yet Romney has a financial advantage over the president, according to the most recent fundraising reports, and a move by the Republicans into any of them could force Obama to dip into his own campaign treasury in regions he has considered relatively safe.

Making his case for the support of female voters, Romney said in the Fox interview: "'Look, I'm the guy that was able to get health care for all of the women and men in my state. ... 'I'm very proud of what we did."

It was a rare voluntary reference to the legislation he signed as governor of Massachusetts that required the state's residents to purchase coverage, the sort of mandate that is at the heart of Obama's federal legislation that conservatives oppose and Romney has vowed to see repealed.

Romney added that the state law was put into place "without cutting Medicare, which obviously affects a lot of women."

That was a reference to the federal law, which cut more than $700 billion in projected Medicare costs to help provide health care to millions who could not otherwise afford it.

Medicare generally favors Democrats as a political issue, but Romney has aggressively sought to cut into that advantage. He released a new television ad criticizing Obama's handling of the program with a catchphrase of "It ain't right."

The streets around the convention hall were crowded with police, National Guard and other security officials, who manned checkpoints in squads rather than individually.

A few hundred protesters gathered in a park about a half-mile from the convention vowed to make their point regardless of Tropical Storm Isaac. They set out large blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class," and left them to melt on a warm, humid day, a gesture meant to signify middle class disappearance in a tough economy.

Bush and McCain were interviewed on NBC, and Priebus spoke on CNN.

'Cyborg' tissues: Merging engineered human tissues with bio-compatible nanoscale wires

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Harvard scientists have, for the first, time created a type of "cyborg" tissue by embedding a three-dimensional network of functional, bio-compatible nanoscale wires into engineered human tissues.

As described in a paper published August 26 in Nature Materials, a multi-institutional research team led by Charles M. Lieber, the Mark Hyman, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Harvard and Daniel Kohane, a Harvard Medical School professor in the Department of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston developed a system for creating nanoscale "scaffolds" which could be seeded with cells which later grew into tissue.

Also contributing to the work were Robert Langer, from the Koch Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Zhigang Suo, the Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

The research addresses a concern that has long been associated with work on bioengineered tissue -- how to create systems capable of sensing chemical or electrical changes in the tissue after it has been grown and implanted. The system might also represent a solution to researchers' struggles in developing methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

Using the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, Bozhi Tian, a former doctoral student under Lieber and former postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane and Langer labs, and collaborator Jia Liu worked in Lieber's lab at Harvard to build mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 30 -- 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a reticular conformation.

The process of building the networks, Lieber said, is similar to that used to etch microchips.

Beginning with a two-dimensional substrate, researchers laid out a mesh of organic polymer around nanoscale wires, which serve as the critical nanoscale sensing elements. Nanoscale electrodes, which connect the nanowire elements, were then built within the mesh to enable nanowire transistors to measure the activity in cells without damaging them. Once complete, the substrate was dissolved, leaving researchers with a net-like sponge or a mesh that can be folded or rolled into a host of three dimensional shapes.

Once complete, the networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on two-dimensional layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

Using heart and nerve cells, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Using the embedded devices, they were able to detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the tissue, and to measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neuro-stimulating drugs.

Researchers were also able to construct bioengineered blood vessels, and used the embedded technology to measure pH changes -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments -- both inside and outside the vessels.

Though a number of potential applications exist for the technology, the most near-term use, Lieber said, may come from the pharmaceutical industry, where researchers could use the technology to more precisely study how newly-developed drugs act in three dimensional tissues, rather than thin layers of cultured cells. The system might also one day be used to monitor changes inside the body and react accordingly, whether through electrical stimulation or the release of a drug.

Access to Credit and Business Survival - Small Business Trends

A paper published last year by Traci Mach of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and John Wolken, formerly of that organization, shows how important access to credit is for small business survival.

tug of war

Using data from the Federal Reserve?s Survey of Small Business Finances, Mach and Wolken found that businesses that had less access to credit in 2003 were more likely to go out of business between 2004 and 2008. In addition, they found that measures of the businesses? access to credit were more predictive of company survival than were attributes of the business, owner, and market.

When this paper first came out, I thought the findings were self-evident. If lenders are any good at their jobs, then they should provide more credit to better companies run by more talented founders. Therefore, businesses that had better access to credit in 2003 should have been more likely to survive over the next five years than other companies. Presumably, they were the better companies.

But upon further reflection, I think this paper illustrates an important problem that central bankers, like Ben Bernanke, face. If the fraction of talented small business owners with good business ideas is roughly the same whether its 2008 or 2012, then this paper shows the importance of the getting public policy toward credit tightness correct.

When bank lending standards are looser, then the average business has more access to credit than when bank lending standards are tighter. That means that the average small company is more likely to survive in years when small business credit is easier to get.

That point highlights a key issue for the Fed chairman: Should the central bank encourage lenders to have easy or tough credit standards? If standards are low, then more businesses have access to credit and will survive over time. But if the businesses themselves are no better than when standards are high, then low standards means that the banks are propping up weak businesses with loose credit.

Because we don?t know how tight lending standards should be, the Fed risks making one of two mistakes in creating incentives for banks to lend money to small businesses. If it makes the banks maintain high lending standards that are too high, then it will cause many small businesses to fail, including some that should remain in operation. But if the Fed lets the banks maintain lending standards that are too low, then it is leading banks to keep alive small businesses that aren?t viable.

I?m glad I am not trying to get the job of Federal Reserve Bank Chairman.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

With the remarks, Obama set up a contrast between Romney, whom he cast as an extremist pushing staunchly conservative policies, and himself, by saying he would work across party lines. It was a seeming play for the independent voters who decide close elections and tell pollsters they want to see the often-gridlocked politicians in Washington solve the nation's problems.

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Gov. Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly 10 weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Gov. Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both he and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the stalemated politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Gov. Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."
