Afghan mining minister seeks London capital

Mining is expected to generate tax revenues of ?1 billion over the next five years for Afghanistan, according to the country?s Minister of Mines.

Wahidullah Shahrani, who is in London to try to attract investment and keep aid flowing, said that ?mining is already a key economic driver? for the country, which boasts huge deposits of copper, gold, rubies, coal and iron ore. He was meeting David Cameron at a drinks reception at 10 Downing Street last night.

British efforts to extract the country?s natural resources are being led by Ian Hannam, a former JP Morgan banker, and Richard Williams.
