Sailing to the Greek Islands!

After setting sail in Istanbul, we arrived on the island of Chios on Sunday afternoon. After docking, we took an afternoon excursion to the Monastery of Nea Moni. It was set high up in the hills and offered a beautiful view of the ocean and Chios harbor front.

On Monday morning, we awoke to the? island of Crete. We took a full day excursion to see Knossos and the Heraklion Gallery. Both of our stops were wonderful! So many exquisite pieces in the gallery and Knossos was a once in a lifetime experience! After a morning of sightseeing, we ate lunch at a restaurant that featured local and seasonal fare. It was fantastic. In the afternoon, (right now!) we had some time at leisure to explore the old Venetian town of Rethymnon.
Everyone is having a great time so far. Beautiful weather, great ship, and fantastic people!

BUKULMEZ, Turkey (AP) ? Smoking a cigarette outside a Turkish hospital near the Syrian border, a man in a gray gown and flip-flops held his sleeping 2-year-old daughter, Aya. On Aya's right eye was a bandage. In her left hand was a chocolate bar.

Aya lost her eye when she was struck by shrapnel from a shell that also killed her 8-month-old brother, Mohammad, and their mother. The father and daughter were among some 200,000 people who the U.N. said late Sunday have fled Syria's largest city, Aleppo, during days of clashes between rebels and the military.

Aleppo residents, some severely wounded, are packing up belongings and loading them onto cars, trucks and even motorcycles to seek temporary shelter in rural villages and schools outside the city and dusty tents across the border in Turkey.

In interviews with The Associated Press, refugees described a city besieged by government troops and beset by incessant shelling. Food supplies and gasoline are running low and black market prices for everyday staples are soaring.

As the violence intensified, the country's most senior diplomat in London defected. Charge d'affaires Khaled al-Ayoubi is the latest in a string of high-profile diplomats to abandon President Bashar Assad's regime over a crackdown that, according to rights activists, has killed more than 19,000 people since March 2011.

The battle for Aleppo, a city of 3 million that was once a bastion of support for Assad, is critical for both the regime and the opposition. Its fall would give the opposition a major strategic victory with a stronghold in the north. A rebel defeat, at the very least, would buy Assad more time.

Activists said regime forces were shelling rebel-held districts of the city and a cluster of surrounding villages relentlessly on Monday, sending entire families and panicked residents fleeing. Many went to Turkey, some 30 miles (50 kilometers) away, where tens of thousands of Syrians have already found refuge during the uprising.

Reem, a woman in her 30s who fled Aleppo's rebel-held district of Saif al-Dawleh, was among those who showed up in Turkey on Monday.

"The situation in Aleppo is dreadful," she told the AP soon after arriving at the Bukulmez illegal border crossing, where she was greeted by Turkish soldiers.

"Had it been merely bearable I wouldn't have left my home," she said.

Wearing a black head scarf and black robe and sandals, Reem described hiding for three days in a room near the entrance of the building in which she lived. She then fled to a village near the Turkish border before crossing over on Monday.

"I blame the regime for everything. People in the city used to go out and protest peacefully, but they just shot at them," said Reem, who would not give her last name.

Turkish troops ordered an AP team to leave shortly after journalists began interviewing refugees at the border crossing Monday.

Outside the state-run hospital, Aya's father recounted how his family's tragedy unfolded.

"I was at work when I received the call that a shell had hit my house," he said. "As soon as I returned, I found my wife and son dead on the floor. Part of my son's skull was blown off, and Aya was wounded."

"The whole city is destroyed," said Aya's father, who would not give his name but said that he was from the rebel-held district of Bustan al-Qasr.

The U.N. said 200,000 Syrians have left Aleppo over the past 10 days as the government trains its mortars, tanks and helicopter gunships on the neighborhoods seized by the rebels.

"I am extremely concerned by the impact of shelling and use of tanks and other heavy weapons on people in Aleppo," Valerie Amos, the top U.N. official for humanitarian affairs, said in a statement late Sunday. "Many people have sought temporary shelter in schools and other public buildings in safer areas," she added. "They urgently need food, mattresses and blankets, hygiene supplies and drinking water."

"It is not known how many people remain trapped in places where fighting continues today," she warned.

In online videos, people can be seen scurrying through streets against a backdrop of gunfire and climbing onto any form of transportation available to escape, including trucks, cars and even heavily laden motorcycles.

The authenticity of the videos could not be independently verified.

"Dozens of families are packing their belongings and leaving in cars and trucks," said an activist in a village near Aleppo, who declined to give his name for security reasons. "They are taking only light possessions that they can carry, like a few clothes, some valuables and that's it."

"I saw cars with eight, nine people packed in them fleeing the bombing," he added. He said rebels had seized a nearby checkpoint early Monday and captured several tanks. The regime responded by shelling the rural area just northwest of the city. "Entire families are leaving."

Videos of the attack on the checkpoint in Andan posted on the Internet show fierce exchanges of fire in the early morning and then later, victorious rebels hauling out boxes of ammunition and taking heavy machine guns for the fight in Aleppo.

Among those wounded in Aleppo province on Monday was Al-Jazeera correspondent Omar Khashram, who was hurt by shrapnel after a mortar round fell near his car, a colleague said.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry defended its offensive in Aleppo province, saying it was meant to protect innocent people.

In two letters addressed to the head of the U.N. Security Council and the U.N. Secretary General, Syria said that "armed terrorist groups" backed openly with funds and weapons by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey have committed "horrifying crimes" against innocent civilians. It accused the rebels of using residents as human shields.

Syrian state media reported the army had "purged" Aleppo's southwestern neighborhood of Salaheddine and inflicted "great losses" upon the rebels in one of the first districts they took control of in their bid to seize the city.

Activists, however, disputed these claims. The assault has knocked down power lines, and the neighborhood has been without electricity since the morning.

President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone on Monday and agreed to "coordinate efforts to assist the growing numbers of displaced Syrians, not only within Syria, but in Turkey and the broader region," according to a White House statement.

The Turkish state-run Anadolu agency reported Monday that Turkey is deploying more troops to the border, sending tanks, armored combat vehicles, more missile launchers and infantry troops.

In addition to Turkey, the violence in Syria has sent refugees flooding into Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon. Greece has responded by quadrupling the number of guards on its borders with Turkey out of fear of a potential influx of Syrian refugees.

Al-Ayoubi, the Syrian diplomat in London, is the fourth high-ranking envoy to defect. He was preceded by the charge d'affaires in Cyprus, her husband, a diplomat in the UAE, and by the ambassador to Iraq.

A Foreign Office spokesman said al-Ayoubi was staying in a safe location in the United Kingdom and was in contact with British officials. His departure leaves five staff at the embassy and there has been no indication that they would be leaving their posts as well.

Turkey also reported that the deputy head of security for Syria's Latakia region, a regime stronghold, had defected as well.

The brigadier general was among a group of 12 Syrian officers who crossed into Turkey late Sunday, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. His defection raised to 28 the number of generals who have left for Turkey since the start of the 17-month-old uprising.

2 girls, ages 12 and 13, face felony for fake Facebook account

9 hrs.

Two girls, ages 12 and 13, were arrested on a felony charge after creating a fake Facebook page impersonating a 12-year-old classmate.?They used the page to send threatening messages.

The girls, students at a middle school in?Granbury, Tex., were detained on July 16, and charged with online impersonation, a third-degree felony.

?The juveniles were using the fake Facebook page to make threats towards other students and cultivated a bad reputation for the victim,??according to a Hood County Sheriff?s Department statement, which continues, saying that the girls??caus[ed] the victim to endure threats from other students? and be??rejected by her peers.??

According to Hood County?Sheriff Roger Deeds, who spoke to local media in?the week following the arrest,?this marks the first arrest in the area?related to the online impersonation law, enacted by Texas in 2009.

?This is similar in every way to identity theft,? Deeds said on local access show Granbury TV. ?Normally on an identity theft case,? the thief will take an identity and ?use it for financial gain,? Hood said. ?This was just to try and get back at a person, and ruin them socially, so it?s a big deal.?

The victim?s parents reported the fake Facebook profile to the sheriff?s office on June 28, when the suspects? identities were still unknown. In the following investigation, the sheriff learned that the ?victim was friends with the suspects,? and ?would like to forgive and forget.? ?

The victim?s mother seems less forgiving, telling the Hood County News that her daughter, 11 at the time the profile was?first posted, was confronted in school by friends who had received?threatening messages on Facebook, purportedly sent from the victim herself.?The confrontations almost resulted in a ?physical altercation.??

As the sheriff's statement states, ?The parents of the victim had to endure watching their child suffer the pain that cyber bullying?causes.?

Since Texas law shields juvenile court records, the exact nature of the Facebook page and messages sent are unknown. It?s not clear whether the girls have been released from the juvenile detention center.

On July 28, the Hood County News reported that the girls were still being detained at the Granbury Regional Juvenile Justice Center, 12 days after the arrest. Reporter Mark Wilson cited ?officials,? but we have been unable to confirm this at press time.

?We can?t turn loose on it,??County Attorney Kelton Conner told NBC?News when we inquired about the case, and the status of the girls.?Citing Texas laws that protect juvenile's identities, Conner said, ?We're holding a meeting [Tuesday] morning and we'll get some direction on what information we can release, but we can't do anything without a judge.?

Chris Hansen, staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, notes an increase in?minors punished, both by school and the police, because of social-media?behavior.?

?Every time a new form of communication emerges, there?s hysteria from people who don?t understand it,? he said. ?One example is kids getting suspended or arrested for saying derogatory statements about fellow students online. If it?s not illegal offline, it?s not illegal online."

In May, two junior high?school students in New Haven, Connecticut were arrested and expelled for posting separate violent threats on Twitter. That same month, a student came under police investigation after he was suspended from Como Park Senior High School in St. Paul, Minnesota for allegedly serving another student a cupcake laced with semen.?A month prior, three girls in Indiana were?suspended for joking on Facebook about classmates they'd like to kill, in a free speech case?the ACLU is currently championing.?

While the ACLU is not involved with the Hood County arrests, ?this is the criminalization of children?s behavior,? Hansen told NBC?News. Hansen said such arrests are part of a pattern. ?Increasingly, this is the case, if you misbehave at school, you get arrested. You don?t get suspension. We call it the school-to-prison pipeline.?

Hansen noted that the ages of the girls arrested, 12 and 13, ?is striking, adding that ?there?s a lot of discussion in the Supreme Court whether it?s proper to treat kids as adults, and this seems to me to be an example of this problem.?

Professional Debt Negotiation - Employing an Agency to Negotiate ...

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Professional Debt Negotiation - Employing an Agency to Negotiate Your Unsecured Debt Professional Debt Negotiation - Employing an Agency to Negotiate Your Unsecured Debt

Professional debt negotiation is indeed one of the best alternatives to bankruptcy filing. This is because of the fact that the method of professional debt negotiation ensures that the financial troubles which follow as a trail after bankruptcy filing are avoided. The consumers do not face the problem of loss of credibility and they stay as prime consumers after the negotiation is complete.

Employing an agency to negotiate your unsecured debt may not be easy. The main reason behind this is that their are a number of settlement companies which are not authentic and they fool the consumers to make money. They make false promises and trap the consumers. They charge either very high fees or very low fees. They take the money even before the negotiation starts and once they get the money, they come up with some excuse and say that the creditor did not agree.

You must avoid agencies like these and select the best in class companies which are reputed for the service that they provide. There are several ways to find companies like these. A couple of these methods are discussed below:

Searching the internet using Google: Google is the best search engine in the market and the results returned by Google are trusted all over the world. The top 4 or 5 results which are returned by Google search will give you the list of the most authentic companies in the field of professional debt negotiation. These companies have proper license and registration. They have a good track record and they have a very reasonable fee structure. These companies have passed all the tests of ethical standards which are required for the nature of service that they provide.

Searching the debt relief networks: This is yet again one of the best methods that can be used. The debt relief networks have a complete list of the most authentic companies. The companies listed in a relief network have proper license and registration. They are registered with agencies like the Better Business Bureau which certifies the quality of service that they provide. The companies listed here have passed the tests of ethical standards and they have a very reasonable fee structure.

This is how you employ a professional debt negotiation agency to negotiate your unsecured debts.

For consumers with over k in unsecured debt, debt settlement can be a legitimate way to eliminate a significant amount of that. To find a legitimate company it would be wise to visit a free debt relief network. They will provide free help and point consumers in the right direction whether it is debt settlement or another option. Check out the following link for free debt help:

U.S. should revamp its wildfire air fleet: study

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Forest service should revamp its airborne firefighting fleet to include more amphibious water-scooping aircraft, the Rand Corp think tank said in a study released on Monday.

Air tankers that carry fire retardant and helicopters should be used in supporting roles during the initial attack on fires before they get big, according to the study done for the Forest Service.

Scoopers cost less and can make more trips when water sources are nearby, while air tankers are better for fighting fires far from water, it said.

"We found that the most cost-effective firefighting fleet for the Forest Service will have more scoopers than air tankers for prevention of large fires," Edward Keating, lead author of the study, said in a statement.

The call for an upgrade in the aging air fleet comes as the drought-stricken U.S. West has been ravaged by wildfires, including the worst ever recorded in Colorado.

U.S. firefighting aircraft have had least two fatal accidents this summer, with the crash of a C-130 tanker prompting the grounding of the eight-plane C-130 fleet. Two fatal crashes also took place in 2002.

Tankers carry retardant, which is more costly than water, and can only make about one-and-a-half trips an hour. Their key advantage is that they can support firefighters far from water sources needed by scoopers and helicopters, the study said.

The Forest Service's fleet has historically been made up of helicopters and air tankers, including leased former military tankers that date back to the 1950s.

The costs of putting out fires has risen sharply since 2000 and now average about $1.65 billion a year. Costs have climbed in part because of expanding residential development, climatic changes and accumulation of burnable wood and grasslands in fire-suppression campaigns.

The total annual capital and operating costs per aircraft range from about $2.8 million for a 1,600-gallon (6,000-litre) scooper to $7.1 million for a 3,000-gallon (11,400-litre) tanker before factoring in the cost of retardant, it said.

Rand developed two models for the fleet mix at the request of the Forest Service. Both suggested a dominant role for scoopers, it said.

Mending broken relationships ? Right Minded

With our senior pastor in China the next two weeks, one of our associate pastors, Mike Lee, stepped up to the plate this morning and resumed his study of Philemon. Like the last time he preached, just a few weeks ago, the topic this morning was mending broken relationships.

There are six steps to mending broken relationships:

1. Put yourself in the middle.

There are various excuses we offer for not getting in the middle:
It?s not my problem.
Who am I to judge?
I?m not qualified.

2. Express a willingness to shoulder the debt.

3. Appeal on the basis of friendship.

There are various misunderstandings about Christian friendship:
False Christian friendship is ?live and let live.?
False Christian friendship says, ?I want you comfortable.?
False Christian friendship protects the relationship.
False Christian friendship is blind to faults.

4. Bring the issue into the arena of Lordship.

Arenas that we often seek to escape:
Arena of mysticism
Arena of sociology
Arena of aviodance
Arena of denial

5. Express confidence that they will do what is right.

6. Tell them you are going to follow-up!

Understanding Your Weight Loss With a Food Diary - blog*spot

Now that I fully understand what it takes to eat healthy and maintain a healthy weight, I realize how important it is to have a food journal. I've learned they are one of the most important tools someone could use to lose weight. You may be asking what a food journal is. I'm not referring to one of those diaries that we all had as kids writing down everything from our childhood crushes to the teachers we hated. I'm talking about a book where you write down your diet goals, progress, setbacks and triumphs.

Three years ago, in the beginning of my weight loss process, I hired a personal trainer. I was under the assumption that he'd do all the hard work and magically make me skinny. After three weeks of meeting him in the gym 3-5 times a week, I stepped on the scale to find I hadn't lost a single pound! I got really frustrated and the next day I went back to the gym with the intentions of firing him. He made a deal with me. He said that if I do this homework for a week and still no progress, I can get a new trainer. Deal. I had to write down everything I put in my mouth. Being the good student that I am (and wanting to prove him wrong) I did it. I was also forced by my husband, who was making sure I wasn't cheating or lying on my little project.

After the first 7 days, I gave him my diet journal. I was so proud of myself that I completed it, until I saw how disappointed his face looked. He pointed out the two cups of coffee each morning, a couple of diet cokes every day, finishing off my daughter's bag of chips, the gummy bears from the movie theater, and the four glasses of wine last Friday. He explained that's the reason I hadn't lost any weight.

Now-a-days, I explain the importance of a food journal to all of my own clients. I truly believe it helps people make smart choices when they eat. I always point out that they can do ten hours at the gym all they want, but if they don't watch their diet, they will not succeed.

A food journal is the most important tool in the beginning of a new lifestyle. You can find free diet journals online or buy one in the library. It's also fun to make one by getting a notebook and decorating it with all of your goals. In it, you want to write down everything from breakfast to dinner and include the times that you eat each meal and how you feel throughout the day. Don't forget to include your happy hours or parties. You have to see the flaws in your diet too.

Also include your workouts. Write down when you go to the gym and which exercises you did. Now you can keep track of which muscle groups you need to work and which you need to rest. If you still have questions about why those pants don't fit, take a look at your food journal and you'll have most of the answers right in front of you.

It's helped so much with my own weight loss results. I've surpassed most of my fitness goals and continuing to reach for more. And let me tell you, I still write everything I eat and every exercise I do down in my diet journal. The trick is to be honest with yourself. If you don't want to admit to the food diary you ate a brownie, you're only fooling yourself. I highly recommend a food journal in your path to a healthy lifestyle. It will make your learning, planning and achieving much easier.

6 Tips For Safe Bird Travel, Dog, Cat and other Pet Friendly Travel ...

Before you hit the road for that awesome vacation, remember that not everyone in the house can just jump in the car and go like you. Your pets, especially your bird, need some extra TLC and security when traveling in a car.

Here are 6 tips for a safe trip with your bird:

  1. Pack enough food, toys, and other supplies you?ll need to keep your bird?s cage clean while you?re away. Look up the phone number and address of the vet near where you staying that treats birds. Planning ahead can reduce stress if your bird becomes ill or injured while you?re away.
  2. When making pit stops or taking breaks for lunch, take your bird out of the car too but leave it in the carrier or cage so s/he doesn?t get away. If you have one, use the avian harness if your bird needs to spread its wings and get some exercise.
  3. The carrier that your bird is traveling needs to be secure and should be firmly belted in the backseat. Carriers aren?t very heavy and a sudden stop could propel the carrier and your bird onto the floor of the car or hit your seat. The front seat is not recommended in case you are in an accident and the air bag in the passenger seat goes off. Do not let your bird fly around the car, that is distracting and your bird could end up poking around under the brake and gas pedals.
  4. During the drive, if your bird seems to be stressed, talking can help soothe the anxiety s/he is feeling. You can also try putting a sheet over the cage, but let some light in. Birds that are in the dark can sometimes stumble or fall off the perch if the carrier moves or jostles with the rhythms of the car.
  5. Keep the temperature of the car comfortable for you, your passengers, and your bird. Driving with the windows open might feel nice for you, but your pet may not appreciate the blasts of winds in the backseat. Also, if you smoke, do not smoke in the car with your pets.
  6. When you get your destination, set up your bird?s cage in a secure place, make sure it?s not near any dangers like smoke, a window, or near air fresheners. If you are staying with friends who have cats or dogs, find a space that?s out of their reach so that your bird is safe.

Your bird can read your mannerisms and body language. Try to retain a sense of calmness and relax during the trip. Even if your bird isn?t ready to be completely social and act like s/he does at home, it helps reduce anxiety.

Have a safe trip!

Obama aides: President will visit Israel in a second term

(CNN) ? President Barack Obama, if elected to a second term, would visit Israel, something he has not done since taking office-according to Obama campaign aides.

In a conference call with reporters Monday, Colin Kahl, the former deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East, said "we can expect him to visit Israel in a second term should he be elected."

? Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @PoliticalTicker

Republicans have criticized the president for not making the trek to visit the United States' valued ally.

Earlier Monday, John Bolton, a former U.S ambassador to the United Nations and a foreign policy adviser for GOP challenger Mitt Romney, also criticized Obama for not visiting the country, saying though the president has had time to fit in round after round of golf, "he has not had time to fit into his busy schedule even one trip to Israel."

In response to criticism, Kahl continued: "The president has been to Israel multiple times, but more than that he's backed up his words with feats," noting, among other accomplishments in the region, funding of the 'Iron Dome' missile defense system, put in place to intercept rockets entering Israel.

Obama aides were quick to highlight former Republican presidents' track records on visiting Israel - Ronald Reagan, who never went as president and George W. Bush - who traveled to Israel twice during the last year of his second term.

With the start of Romney's overseas trip, which includes a stop in Israel, just a few days away, the Obama campaign sought to emphasize their rival candidate's resistance to lay out a specific plan for the country's foreign policy.

The former Massachusetts governor's campaign has said that the focus of the candidate's trip will be to "listen and learn" and will not engage in a policy discussion. Despite this, senior Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs said voters will be looking for Romney to lay out a more specific foreign policy plan "rather than just generalities and sound bites."

The Romney campaign responded with this statement issued shortly after the call.

"In no region of the world is our country's influence any stronger than it was four years ago. President Obama has failed to restore our economy, is weakening our military with devastating defense cuts, and has diminished our moral authority. Governor Romney will restore the pillars of American strength to secure our interest and defend our values," said Romney Campaign spokesman Ryan Williams, referring to the Obama campaign's criticism of Romney's attacks on the administration's policy in Israel.

The president's campaign also hammered Romney's plan to hold a fund-raiser while in London, saying Obama himself did not do an overseas fund-raiser during a similar trip when he was campaigning for the White House in 2008.

The Romney campaign pushed back against this argument, citing a Berlin speech Obama gave on his 2008 trip where shortly after campaign manager David Plouffe used the speech to solicit for funds.

Romney is set to begin his travels Wednesday, making an appearance at the London Olympic Games, Israel and Poland all the while meeting with top foreign political figures, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Sat-nav sheep support prediction

Instead of fleeing randomly when faced with a predator, sheep attempt to bury themselves within their flock, new UK research has shown.

The theory that animals moving in groups retreat towards the centre of their flocks if a predator appears has been tested before.

But the researchers are the first to show that sheep behave this way using GPS technology.

Details of the work are published in the journal Current Biology.

Dr Andrew King of The Royal Veterinary College in London co-authored the paper with colleagues from UCL and Cambridge University.

After training an Australian Kelpie working dog to herd a flock of sheep towards an open gate, Dr King's team tracked the movement of the individual sheep as they reacted to the threat and interacted with each other.

Their research shows that as the dog got within 70m of the flock, the sheep began to clump towards the centre of the group.

The British evolutionary biologist Bill Hamilton predicted that individuals within groups move towards the centre when danger appears in order to reduce the chance of being picked off by a predator.

Controlling the threat

However, studying group reactions to predation is very difficult, as it is often challenging to predict when an attack is imminent.

By using the sheep dog, the researchers controlled the experiment and by placing GPS receivers in a small "backpack" on each sheep, it was possible to record all the movements of the animals.

"For the first time, we could show the individual movement trajectories of all the animals involved," explained Dr King.

"Before, we could 'say, yep, they move in and run to the centre'. But because of the GPS backpacks tracking movement every second, [we were able] to monitor every animal when they were under threat".

"The field of collective behaviour is undergoing rapid change at the moment," Prof Jens Krause of Humboldt University in Germany, who was not involved with the project, told BBC News.

"We are getting better and better techniques for studying what is going on and understanding the mechanisms by which animals organise and accomplish collective feats, like sudden changes in direction."

The researchers hope their work will act as a baseline on which further studies into how neurological changes can affect behaviours between individuals can be built.

Fed Beige Book-Minneapolis: Econ Grew Moderately -1 | ForexLive

WASHINGTON (MNI) ? The following is the latest Beige Book survey of
economic conditions in the Federal Reserve?s Ninth District, published
Wednesday:

NINTH DISTRICT?MINNEAPOLIS

The Ninth District economy grew moderately since the last report.
Increased activity was noted in consumer spending, tourism, professional
services, construction, real estate, and agriculture. Growth was also
positive, but slightly slower than in the previous reporting period, in
the manufacturing, energy, and mining sectors. Some tightening was noted
in labor markets, and wage increases were moderate. Price increases were
modest, and some decreases were noted.

Consumer Spending and Tourism

Consumer spending grew moderately. Same-store sales at a
Minnesota-based retailer increased 2 percent in June compared with a
year ago. Sales at a North Dakota mall during June were up over 5
percent compared with a year earlier. A number of new retail store and
restaurant openings were reported in North Dakota. Recent new car and
truck sales were up at dealerships in Montana, according to a
representative of an auto dealers association. However, recent
same-store sales at a Minnesota-based women?s apparel retailer were down
15 percent from a year earlier.

Tourism activity increased from a year ago. Tourism officials in
the Upper Peninsula of Michigan predicted that summer activity will
surpass last year?s levels. In northwestern Wisconsin, resorts were full
and sales at other tourism-related businesses posted strong increases.
Visits to the Minnesota Zoo for the 12-month period ended in June
reached record levels, according to officials. A Minnesota-based travel
agency noted that leisure travel was down somewhat, while corporate
travel was steady; overall revenue was up. However, restaurant and hotel
owners in the Duluth, Minn., area noted a decrease in visits following a
major flood in the region.

Construction and Real Estate

Commercial construction activity increased since the last report.
The value of new commercial building permits issued in Fargo, N.D., so
far in 2012 increased compared with the same period in 2011. Commercial
permits in the Sioux Falls, S.D., area were up substantially in value in
June from a year earlier. Numerous new commercial building projects were
in early stages in the Minneapolis area, including a new headquarters
for a large utility and a major expansion at an area hospital.
Residential construction increased from a year ago. The value of
residential building permits in the Sioux Falls area in June more than
doubled from a year earlier. Residential permits increased in value and
number in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in June; the single-family
sector saw a surprising rebound. Several large multifamily housing
projects were under way in Fargo.

Commercial real estate markets saw continued strength. A
Minneapolis property on which a mixed-use development has been stalled
since 2003 recently sold to a new investor. Prices for commercial
property in the oil boom areas of the District continued to increase.
Residential real estate market activity increased as well. Home sales in
May were up 27 percent from the same period a year ago in the
Minneapolis-St. Paul area; the inventory of homes for sale was down 31
percent, and the median sales price rose by 11 percent. In the Sioux
Falls area, May home sales were up 32 percent, inventory was down, and
the median sales price rose nearly 3 percent relative to a year earlier.

Services

Activity at professional business services firms grew somewhat
since the last report. According to a Minneapolis Fed ad hoc survey,
District professional business services firms noted gains in revenue and
profits over the past three months, while the amount of space occupied
held relatively steady. Respondents were mildly optimistic about the
upcoming three months regarding revenue and profits. Some contacts noted
that competition in the sector has lowered prices and driven down
margins, yet projects were more complex and customer expectations were
higher than five to 10 years ago.

Manufacturing

Growth in the District manufacturing sector moderated slightly from
the last report. A June survey of purchasing managers by Creighton
University (Omaha, Neb.) found that manufacturing activity expanded in
Minnesota and the Dakotas, but at a slightly slower pace than in recent
months. A medical equipment maker near Minneapolis announced an
expansion into a previously idle facility. A pipe producer announced
plans to build a new plant in South Dakota. Plans moved ahead for a
potential $1 billion fertilizer plant in North Dakota that would make
use of natural gas from the state?s oil patch.

Energy and mining

Activity in the energy and mining sectors slowed slightly. Oil and
gas exploration activity decreased in North Dakota and Montana since the
last report, but oil production was at record levels. Reports surfaced
of ethanol producers idling plants in response to sharp increases in
corn prices in late June and early July, along with declining gasoline
prices. District coal-mining operations also saw reductions in demand as
electricity generation shifted toward natural gas. A mining company
suspended its involvement in a joint project to develop a copper, zinc,
and gold mine in Michigan?s Upper Peninsula. However, hard rock mines in
Montana and iron ore producers in northern Minnesota remained busy.
