Here's the Microsoft smart watch... AGAIN | Computerworld Blogs

Microsoft smartwatch SPOT 2?

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is said to be working on a smartwatch. That's 10 years since it tried to excite people with Smart Personal Object Technology (SPOT).

In IT Blogwatch, bloggers suffer some d?j? vu.

Your humble blogwatcher curated these bloggy bits for your entertainment.

Lorraine Luk and Shira Ovide tag-team to report:

Earlier this year, Microsoft asked suppliers in Asia to ship components for a potential watch-style device. ... But it's unclear whether Microsoft will opt to move ahead.
...
Gartner expects the market for wearable smart electronics to be a $10 billion industry by 2016. ... For its potential new watch prototype, Microsoft has requested 1.5-inch displays from component makers.??MORE

John Ribeiro adds:

...
This isn't the first time, however. ... It launched a smart wrist watch around a concept called [SPOT] in 2002, but withdrew it after a lackluster performance.??MORE

Microsoft?s original [SPOT] relied on FM radio signals to deliver lightweight information such as stock prices and sports scores. ...these days [it would be] a companion to a smartphone. ... But given Windows Phone?s limited market share...Microsoft would be at a disadvantage.??MORE

?
Chris Velazco muses thuswise:

Now that?s not to say that such a Microsoft smartwatch is a done deal. ...the folks in Redmond aren?t exactly sure themselves. After all, some of the company?s most intriguing potential products died ignominious deaths. ... Remember the Courier? The curious dual-screen tablet was apparently very far along...before Microsoft announced its demise in 2010.
...
For all we know, Microsoft could be the company best equipped to take the smartwatch concept and bring it to the masses.??MORE

?
But skt.smth isn't buying it:

Seriously, who actually wants one of these things? It's just another device to charge, sync, etc. and it's not measurably more convenient than a smartphone. I'm just not seeing the broad appeal here.??MORE

?
And Solid Snake slides in this oh-so-necessary gag:

Blue screen of death.
Anytime. Anywhere.??MORE
