APNewsBreak: New security for US troops

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. troops in Afghanistan now have far-reaching new protections against rogue killers among their Afghan allies, including assigned "guardian angels," fellow troops who will watch over them as they sleep.

Marine Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, ordered the added protections in recent weeks to guard against insider threats, according to a senior military official. They come in the wake of 16 attacks on U.S. and coalition forces by Afghans that now represent nearly one-fifth of all combat deaths this year.

Some of the changes have been subtle, others less so.

In several Afghan ministries, Americans are now allowed to carry weapons. And they have been instructed to rearrange their office desks there to face the door, so they can see who is coming in, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the orders.

Two U.S. military officers working in the Afghan Interior Ministry, one of the most heavily guarded ministry buildings in Kabul, were gunned down at their desks on Feb. 25.

While Allen did not detail the new measures in a briefing earlier this week, he acknowledged that changes had been made.

"We have taken steps necessary on our side to protect ourselves with respect to, in fact, sleeping arrangements, internal defenses associated with those small bases in which we operate," Allen said, adding that now someone is "always overwatching our forces."

The security measures came after the U.S. military mistakenly burned Qurans and other religious materials in February, triggering anti-American demonstrations and riots. And on March 11, 17 Afghan civilians, including nine children, allegedly were killed by a U.S. soldier.

Allen issued a directive "to get every single troop in the war zone to read it and think" ? and to emphasize that troops should be aware of their surroundings as they go about their jobs, the military official said. Allen also issued other orders that more specifically dealt with security at the Afghan ministries.

Navy Capt. John Kirby, a spokesman for Allen, said the general "ordered commanders to take appropriate steps to protect his troops, prudent steps that make sense to our Afghan partners as well. But he also made it clear that we weren't coming to all stop, that the work must continue, and that we couldn't let the partnership itself become a casualty of war."

U.S. commanders and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta say the killings do not represent a trend, and they say that fewer than half of the killings have been by Afghans associated with the Taliban.

Instead, Allen said, these types of attacks come with fighting an insurgency and happened in Iraq and Vietnam. The enemy, he said, will do what it can to disrupt efforts to train and grow a nation's indigenous security force.

Still, the recent increase in Afghans gunning down troops they are serving with reflects increased tensions between Afghanistan and the U.S. just as the American-led coalition force escalates efforts to train Afghans to take over their own security so that most NATO forces can leave by the end of 2014.

Officials insist the killings have not hampered the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. But they come at a time when new, small advisory teams are heading into Afghanistan to enhance the training program, requiring them to work closely with Afghan military units.

So far this year, 16 NATO service members have been shot and killed by Afghan soldiers and policemen or militants disguised in their uniforms, according to an Associated Press tally. That equals 18 percent of the 84 foreign troops killed this year in Afghanistan. Of the approximately 80 NATO service members killed since 2007 by Afghan security forces, more than 75 percent were in the past two years.

In two separate incidents on Monday, Afghan security forces shot and killed one American and two British troops.

In one incident, two British service members were killed by an Afghan soldier in front of the main gate of a joint civilian-military base in southern Afghanistan, the coalition said. And in the second incident, a U.S. service member was shot and killed at a checkpoint in Paktika province in eastern Afghanistan by a man who was believed to be a member of a village-level fighting force the U.S. is fostering in hopes of countering the Taliban insurgency.

According to the senior military official, the so-called guardian angels provide an extra layer of security, watching over the troops as they sleep, exercise or go about other daily activities.

Allen noted that the Afghans also have taken some similar steps to provide guards for their own forces.

The Afghans also have inserted their own intelligence officers into their units to help try to ferret out possible insurgents or rogue soldiers. And, since the ministry shooting, the Afghans have taken a number of steps to increase building security in the ministries and to improve the vetting of their workers.

"They are helping the troops to understand how to recognize radicalization or the emergence of extremism in some of those, in individuals who may in fact be suspect," Allen said.

He noted that there have also been some arrests by Afghan forces when they identified possible attackers within their ranks.

Amateur Radio for communications resilience Over the dozen or so years that I have been studying and applying sustainable design principles, I have observed that one of the permaculture community?s weakest areas of focus is in the realm of developing resilient communications systems. Here in the relatively affluent western world, we take it for granted that telephone landline, cell phone and internet service is available 24/7/365, all of which is possible due to the readily accessible and affordable energy that is currently at hand. But what is the likelihood that these convenient communications channels will be available in a world of increasing energy access constraints? Will the server farms and cell towers continue to function? Besides the energy issue and fear of a potential ?Zombie Apocalypse?, how can we stay in touch with our friends and family while also keeping important information flowing when natural disasters such as earthquakes, wildfires and other catastrophies occur at the local and regional level?

Building redundancy into our systems is a key part of permaculture design. When one or two elements fail, fall-back strategies help keep the overall system functioning. This I believe, is why amateur radio is so important and should be adopted as an integral part of everyones? overall design system, both at the home and community level.

I personally caught the radio bug at a young age. My father, who was an immigrant from Eastern Europe, brought his console radio with him when he moved to the United States. Included in the cabinet was not only a turntable and standard AM/FM broadcast receiver, but also a shortwave receiver with a graphical display of all the frequencies that could be tuned to in order to receive broadcasts from around the world. I was fascinated by the notion that it was possible to hear stations from Mexico, Canada and Europe and I?d listen to them whenever the ionospheric conditions allowed these long-distance transmissions to be heard. In all likelihood, it was this early exposure to radio that motivated me to become a radio broadcaster at KZSC 88.1 FM during my college days. After college, I purchased a shortwave radio of my own and challenged myself to hear DX (long-distance) broadcasts from around the world, I got to guest DJ for a neighbor at Burning Man who was operating a 1-watt FM ?pirate? radio station, and later, I toyed around with CB radios, only to find the 40 channels there polluted with cussing loud-mouths using modified rigs and 100 watt linear amplifiers which prevented anyone else from getting a word in edgewise. It was impossible to cut through all the noise and have an intelligent conversation. Then I discovered the amateur radio service!

At first, the notion that I had to take a technically-oriented test in order to get my entry-level ham ?ticket? was off-putting, but I eventually put my mental block aside after I realized that hams take the art and science of radio much more seriously than do the jabber jaws of the CB band, and not only that, knowledge of morse code was no longer required! If passing a simple 35 question multiple choice test (the FCC makes the question pool and all the answers available to you in advance) to get a Technician?s license was the only thing getting between me and a free, decentralized, wireless communications system, I eventually had to ask myself, ?What the heck am I waiting for??.

So I ordered a copy of the ARRL?s Ham Radio License Manual and began devouring the info. The great thing about this book is that as you read about licensing regulations, radio theory, safety and good operating practices, you are referred to the relevant test questions that appear in the appendix at the back of the book. To my relief, I discovered that there really isn?t all that much math or knowledge of electronics involved. It took me about one month of on-and-off studying to get through, and at the end, I loaded the book?s software CD onto my laptop so that I could take randomized practice exams. By the 5th or 6th try, I was aceing them and fully confident that I would do just fine on the actual test day. I contacted my local club, the Nevada County Amateur Radio Club, to let them know I planned to attend their next test session and showed up on the day of the test with money, pencil, and photo ID in hand. The club?s Volunteer Examining Committee (VEC) charged me just $15 to protor the test, grade it and submit my test results and license application to the FCC. The license itself doesn?t cost a penny and it lasts for 10 years, at which time you must renew it through the FCC for another decade. The room was quite full, with both aspiring hams going for the entry-level Technician class license, and those who were testing to upgrade to either a General or Amateur Extra License Class which would give them additional operating privileges on the HF (high-frequency) bands. My studying paid off! I scored 35/35 on the Technician exam and was given the option to test for the General license, which I took them up on at no extra charge. Without even studying, I scored 20/35 ? not quite enough to qualify, but not too shabby considering that I hadn?t even read up on the General class info. Once all my paperwork was submitted by the VEC, I waited 6 days and my new call sign was posted on the FCC?s amateur radio license database: KJ6UPR. Now I could finally start operating!

Meghan McCain in Playboy: Loving Sex, Hating Bristol Palin

Meghan McCain, daughter of U.S. Senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain, poses for Playboy this month. Innocently, of course.

Her mere presence in the men's mag (and some of the quotes she gave in an interview with it) are sure to raise eyebrows, but this one pic is it. Sorry.

Meghan revealed to Playboy that she “almost overdosed on Xanax” the day before the 2008 election, and dismissed any rumors that she is gay.

Using an obscene rhyme, Meghan, a same-sex marriage advocate, said was “strictly d!ckly” (straight), adding: “I can’t help it. I love sex and I love men.”

Shifting her focus elsewhere, Meghan McCain told Playboy that a memoir written by Bristol Palin, Sarah’s daughter known for her teen pregnancy, was a “total lie.”

At the WHCA dinner, Bristol “totally took off” when she saw Meghan across the room, lest Bristol be confronted about the book's remarks on the McCain family.

In Not Afraid of Life, Bristol dings Meghan and mom Cindy McCain for having “so much Louis Vuitton luggage, so many cell phones, so many helpers," etc.

Bristol Palin also writes of Meghan McCain that after their first meeting in 2008, she had the “sneaking suspicion that I might need to watch my back.”

At their run-in last year, “I saw her across the room,” Meghan said. “That girl biffed it fast, totally took off. All that stuff she wrote was a total lie."

"I have, like, one Louis Vuitton purse. I understand that she’s just young and confused and was thrust into all this. The media aren’t kind to her."

"But, once someone signs up for Dancing with the Stars, it’s hard to sympathize.”

Everist Announces Advance In Diagnosis, Prognosis Of Colorectal ...

ANN ARBOR ? Everist Genomics, a rapidly growing personalized medicine company, today announced the launch of the world?s first comprehensive companion diagnostics and prognostics portfolio to improve early diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with colorectal cancer.

The portfolio of four individual tests provides innovative gene expression profiling and analysis of molecular markers to help physicians track tumor development and responsiveness to therapy, enabling personalized treatment across all stages of colorectal cancer.

The tests will be available to U.S. customers starting at the end of March, which is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

?Advances in molecular diagnostics and genomics have revealed that colorectal cancer is not a single disease with just a single risk factor,? said Peter Lenehan, M.D., Ph.D. EGI?s Chief Medical Officer. ?In fact, it presents a high degree of variance at the molecular level that can significantly determine a patient?s individual prognosis.?

The company?s portfolio is comprised of four unique companion diagnostics:

* OncoDefender-MMR assists physicians in assessing prognosis and defining optimal treatment for colorectal cancer patients at all stages of the disease
* OncoDefender-CRC is the world?s first molecular diagnostic test to assist physicians in identifying early-stage colorectal cancer patients likely to benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy
* OncoSelector?is a companion diagnostic for patients who have tested positive with OncoDefender-CRC. OncoSelector?assists physicians in determining which type of chemotherapy a colorectal cancer patient is likely to respond best to; 5-FU or irinotecan
* OncoDefender-Lynch syndrome identifies patients with this inherited disorder that is associated with a high life-time risk of developing one of several types of cancer, including colon cancer

The human body is genetically equipped to ensure proper replication and repair of DNA. However, the process can be imperfect, especially in patients with cancer. A mutation in the body?s mismatch repair system that normally helps correct improper DNA copying, can cause microsatellite instability (MSI), a condition in which replicated strands of DNA accumulate errors and become longer and shorter than they should be. People with MSI are more likely to suffer from errors in the repair and copying of their DNA.

MSI is an important consideration when determining which chemotherapy method will work best for a particular patient. Independent research shows that colon cancer patients with MSI may not benefit from, and might actually be harmed by, 5-FU therapy. These patients may be more responsive to irinotecan. On the other hand, colon cancer patients with correctly functioning microsatellites are likely to respond to and tolerate 5-FU therapy.

Research also suggests that patients with Lynch syndrome have defective DNA MMR systems. Physicians recommend that, given their increased risk for cancer, patients with the condition should be actively screened and often modify their lifestyles to prevent cancer. Doctors estimate that three out of every 100 colon cancers are caused by Lynch syndrome. Because Lynch syndrome is hereditary, active screening of family members of people who have the condition may also lead to early diagnosis and improved treatment planning.

?Companion diagnostics have the potential to greatly improve patient outcomes and to transform the practice of medicine,? said Alex Charlton, executive vice chairman of EGI. ?Until recently, the technological challenges involved in creating tests with these capabilities appeared insurmountable. Development of our portfolio required pinpointing the handful of genes and specific gene expression levels that affect how these tumors develop and how they respond to chemotherapy. In the past, an effort of this magnitude might require 10 years of research and analysis. Shyness study examines how human brain adapts to stimuli

ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2012) ? Shyness may be the result of deficits in two areas of the brain, new research from Vanderbilt University finds. Extremely shy or inhibited individuals are typically slow to acclimate to new people.

The study, recently published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, found that individuals who identified themselves as inhibited may experience habituation failure -- or the inability to adapt to new stimuli -- in the amygdala and the hippocampus regions of the brain.

The researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine adults with either an inhibited or uninhibited temperament. Study participants were shown pictures of unfamiliar faces multiple times.

Individuals with an uninhibited temperament demonstrated habituation in both the amygdala and hippocampus. Their brain response increased when the faces were new but declined as they became familiar.

In contrast, individuals with an inhibited temperament failed to habituate across repeated presentations of faces, meaning familiar faces triggered the same brain response as the unfamiliar.

"This failure to habituate provides a novel neural mechanism for understanding the shy and cautious behavior that is characteristic of inhibited individuals," said Jennifer Urbano Blackford, Ph.D., assistant professor of Psychiatry and Psychology and lead author of the study.

"Individuals who familiarize more slowly may find encounters with new people overwhelming and thus avoid new social experiences, whereas those who adjust more quickly may be more likely to seek novel social experiences."

Blackford and colleagues think that this failure to habituate may be a key cause of social anxiety disorder, the persistent, chronic fear of a specific social situation. Social anxiety disorder is the second most common anxiety disorder and affects approximately one in 10 adults in the United States.

She is continuing her research by studying inhibited children to see if this brain deficit is present early in development.

Blackford conducted this research with Amil Allen, fourth-year Vanderbilt University School of Medicine student; Ronald Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Psychiatry; and Suzanne Avery, third-year Neuroscience doctoral student.

Williams to Hear from NFL this Week, Brees Talks About Bounty Program

After the news of Bountygate entered the cycle about 10 days ago, St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who appeared to be the ringleader, will learn his punishment and fate this week.

According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch?s Jim Thompson, ?Rams are expecting to learn Greg Williams? ?Bountygate? penalty some time this week, per team source.?

So what would this entail? PFT offers a few scenarios.

Some league insiders believe Williams could see a lifetime ban. If it is challenged in court, it may not survive due to the NFL?s antitrust laws. Another scenario is Williams could face a long suspension?possibly a year or longer?and his employment with the Rams will come to an end.

NFL teams can come together and fail to ever give Williams a job again, which essentially results in a ban for life but there?s also the possibility an NFL friend could hire Williams down the road.

In addition to a punishment being handed to Williams this week, other players in Bountygate such as Saints head coach Sean Payton and GM Mickey Loomis could also learn how they will be disciplined. ?The penalties may include a suspension for Payton but it?s less clear at this point for either.

Drew Brees Speaks Out on Bountygate

Not much has been heard from Saints quarterback Drew Brees since his unhappiness with his salary after being tagged. He hasn?t really spoken out about Bountygate but on Friday, he used his website to address it.

Here?s a few nuggets from his letter to fans.

?There is no place in the National Football League, or any sport played at any level, for players to conspire, to be coerced, or to be incentivized to intentionally injure another player. I did not participate in any Bounty program, nor did I have any knowledge relating to its real existence. I have spent the last several years as an Executive Committee Member of the NFLPA making health and safety a priority and I am proud of the advancements we?ve made and will continue to make.

As a leader of our football team, I feel comfortable in stating that I know well the integrity of our organization from the ownership level, to management, our head coach, and the players on our team. We, as Saints players, pride ourselves on playing this game with honor and hold ourselves to a very high standard. We also share a great sense of responsibility to our community and to each other, a strong belief in our purpose, a resiliency to overcome adversity and a work ethic and commitment to leave things better than we found them.

The accusations and perceptions alone created by this issue make us feel like we should all apologize to the young people that love our game and aspire to be in our shoes. Regardless of the outcome of the ?bounty? issue, we owe it to them to provide the best example of how to behave as professionals and more importantly, as people of integrity.?
