One half of female identity theft pair arrested after vehicle crash ...

When we hear a word, most of us picture a certain image or scenario in our minds. When we hear the term white collar crime for instance, we may picture a business man in an office desk handling large financial sums. This isn't always the case. Identity theft is one of those instances in which we might think that only a businessman will be charged.

Two women were accused of having a "Thelma and Louise" kind of relationship when police arrested one half of the female pair for an alleged crime spree that began with identity theft and then escalated into other kinds of theft, including reports that the two women had stolen vehicles.

Police arrested the 22-year-old woman on Saturday afternoon after they had traced her across several states. The woman had been seen driving closely towards a vehicle that had been reported stolen. Police assumed that the two vehicles were traveling together, driven each by one of the two women. Law enforcement turned on their lights and entered into a pursuit with the vehicles. The woman driving behind the vehicle that had been reported stolen ended up crashing into a parked car when her vehicle spun out of control.

Police ended up arresting the woman and charging her with identity theft and other property theft crimes. It is unclear whether federal officials were involved in the investigation. However, in instances where alleged crimes cross state boundaries, federal authorities often take jurisdiction and the charges could end up in federal court.

Mental Health - A Lesson Taught By The Newtown Tragedy ...

?

With school security on everyone's mind, the Greenwich PTA Council Wellness Committee is sponsoring a panel discussion this week focusing?on children's mental health issues specifically?on helping to identify them and providing resources for addressing them.

The discussion will be moderated by a panel of Greenwich Public Schools psychologists, social workers and guidance counselors including Bill Quinn, Danielle Polizzi, Nancy McGraw, Lisa Strizver, Lori Parisi and Michelle Friedman.

One Parent's Proactive Idea Spurs Forum

As the tragedy in Newtown unfolded and details emerged, parents across the country all were asking the same question of what are the warning signs. Julian Curtiss parent, Marianne Koushouris, took that question in her mind one step further. She approached Julian Curtiss PTA President Cheryl Resnick to inquire whether something could formally be organized in a format where professionals could attempt to answer such questions?weighing on?parents.

Koushouris felt that parents across the district would be interested in being educated in the warning signs of?childhood depression and how and where to seek the proper assistance. Resnick then brought it forward to the council.

PTA Council Wellness Co-Chair Alexis Voulgaris said that her committee sought to "gather a broad range of panelists and allow them to present on a wide variety of issues facing children such as anxiety, depression, stress, anger, peer pressure, etc."

In addition, the intent?of the forum is?to?"stress?it's a great opportunity for any/all parents to hear experts talk about childhood mental health issues in a safe environment where no one is passing judgment on a parent or child for attending," said Voulgaris.

Greenwich PTA Council President Lisa Beth Savitz said?of the forum?that?"we hope parents will gain an understanding of children's mental health issues and learn when to seek professional assistance."

The forum will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6? at the Greenwich High School Media Center. Any questions please contact ptacgreenwich@gmail.com.

Board Business

The Greenwich Board of Education will convene again on Thursday, Feb. 7 for a work session.

Superintendent William McKerise will present a?Diagnostic Memorandum to the board representing the district's proposed strategy and action plan to deal with lagging results on standardized tests.

Based upon analysis of district results from 2007-2011, six issues?have been?identified as root causes for the performance gap between Greenwich and other comparable districts in the state:

  • Low student achievement in reading and mathematics at the end of primary grades;
  • A recent two-year decline in writing scores measured by the CMT (Connecticut Mastery Test) in grades 3 to 8;
  • Poor performance in science as measured by the CMT in grades 5 and 8 and by the CAPT (Connecticut Academic Performance Test) in grade 10;
  • Achievement gaps in student subgroups such as free and reduced lunch;
  • A lack of growth in both mathematics and reading scores for Greenwich students in grades 5 to 6 as compared to other districts;
  • A lag in performance for students who are new to the district.

In response to these issues, the Board of Education decided in June 2012 to adopt three goals which they believed would drive improved district performance through the 2014-2015 school year:

  1. Reading - increase the % of students Goal/Mastery at the CMT to 83%;
  2. Mathematics - increase the % of 8th grades students who successfully pass Algebra I to 75%;
  3. Writing - increase the?% of Grade 8 students at Goal/Mastery in CMT Writing to 87%.

In undertaking its analysis, the district noted that while the appropriate professional practices have been implemented, their impact has been negatively impacted by competing practices that utilize?the time that should be applied for discussing, collaborating on and planning these action plans.

McKerisie will present a 23-page Diagnostic Memorandum Progress Update identifying the "priority work" organized by "cause," "solutions" and "strategies" for each goal as well as next steps.

For example, the critical skill of?reading is?noted as a centerpiece for the new Common Core Standards adopted by the State and the District. The report notes that "students learn to read so they can read to learn."

Despite years of focusing resources at improving reading skills for its students, the report notes that "the percentage of Greenwich third grades achieving at goal or higher on CMT reading has been flat or lagging to comparable districts in 2011."?The report articulates four causes, a variety of potential solutions, the strategies the district is undertaking to deal with the issue and the current status and update.

While dense with information, the report?is notable for its focus on detailed goals and action steps to deal with an issue which has become a perennial sore-point for the Greenwich community; the seemingly continuing lag in standardized test scores for students attending the?Greenwich Public School system in relation to comparable districts.

Other monitoring reports to be presented include:

The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the board room at the Havemeyer Building, 290 Greenwich Ave.

How Many Myths About Cancer Do You Still Believe?

If you're like most people, cancer isn't something abstract?chances are you know someone who's been through it, or maybe you have yourself. The disease touches almost everyone in some way, and yet myths and misperceptions about cancer are common.

MSN Causes/TakePart: Get Smart About Cancer

Today is World Cancer Day, sponsored by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). This year, the UICC is focused on promoting some truths about cancer and burying falsehoods. Do you think you know a lot about the disease? Take our quick quiz!

1. Cancer is primarily a problem among older people in developed nations: True or False?

2. Having cancer is more than just a health issue: True or False?

3. People with cancer have a high chance of dying from the disease: True or False?

4. There is a lot people can do to reduce their risks of cancer: True or False?

It's critical to address common myths about cancer if more people are to be spared from the disease, Vanessa Von der Muhll of the UICC told TakePart. "Fear may play a role in the pervasive nature of myths surrounding cancer," she says, noting that conflicting reports in the news add to the confusion. "Big issues often pose big questions and foster misunderstanding. And cancer is a big issue. It is one of the biggest killers in the world, accounting for nearly eight million deaths per year."

Here are the quiz answers, with input from Von der Muhll.

1. Cancer is primarily a problem among older people in developed nations: FALSE

About half of all cancer cases, and more than half of all deaths, occur in less-developed parts of the world. And if trends continue, cancer cases will increase by 81.5 percnt in developing countries by 2030. Certain types of cancers occur much more often in developing nations. For example, 85 percent of deaths worldwide from cervical cancer are among women in developing countries.

M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Shoots for the Moon

And the disease doesn't just primarily afflict the elderly. In developing nations, about half the cancer cases are in people under age 65. "Cancer is also a disease of young people," she says. "For children aged 5 to 14, cancer is a leading cause of death in many countries. There are an estimated 160,000 newly diagnosed cases of childhood cancer worldwide each year with more than 70 percent of the world's children with cancer lacking access to effective treatment. The result is an unacceptably low survival rate of about 10 percent in developing countries compared to about 90 percent in high-income countries. "

2. Having cancer is more than just a health issue: TRUE

Cancer carries social, economic, development, and human rights implications, Von der Muhll says. "In many developing countries, for example, where awareness is a big obstacle, misconceptions about diagnosis and treatment and stigma associated with cancer can lead individuals to seek alternative care in place of standard treatment or to avoid care altogether," she says. "Understanding and responding to cultural beliefs and practices is essential."

In addition, cancer both causes and is an outcome of poverty. It disrupts an individual's ability to earn a living, and treatment costs can send some families into poverty. The worldwide cost of treating cancer is estimated to reach $458 billion a year in 2030. But implementing cost-effective strategies to prevent the disease?such as programs to reduce smoking and alcohol use and to improve diets and physical activity levels?would cost only $2 billion a year.

Could Herpes Kill Breast Cancer?

3. People with cancer have a high chance of dying from the disease: FALSE

Cancer is not a death sentence. Advances in understanding how and why cancer develops and how it acts in the body have revolutionized how the disease is managed. In the United States alone, there are 12 million people living with cancer.

Early-stage cancers are much more likely to be curable than ever before. Screening programs, such as mammography, have led to big reductions in cancer deaths. In countries with access to the Pap test, cervical cancer death rates have plummeted. But there's still a big gap in death rates between wealthier, developed nations and less-developed countries.

Some people may think that cancer treatment is too complex and expensive to be offered in poor nations. But a recent report shows that many off-patent cancer medications are affordable for people in those countries. More work needs to be done to make anti-cancer?vaccines, such as the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, available to people worldwide.

4. There is a lot people can do to reduce their risk of cancer: TRUE

Cancer is not your fate. Even if you have a high family history of the disease, there are many strategies to reduce your risk. "A lot of people do not realize that actually one in three cancer cases could be prevented through simple lifestyle choices," Von der Muhll says. "These lifestyle factors include tobacco, alcohol intake, diet, physical inactivity, exposure to ultraviolet light, and protecting against cancer-causing infections. Improving diet, physical activity and maintaining a healthy body weight could prevent around a third of the most common cancers alone."

Here is some specific prevention advice from the American Cancer Society:

??? Stay away from tobacco.

??? Eat healthfully: Watch your portion size. Choose vegetables, whole fruit, legumes, and fish. Stay away from calorie-dense foods like potato chips, ice cream, donuts, and sweets. Limit your intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and red meats.

??? Get active: Adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week.

??? Control your weight.

??? Be safe in the sun. Use sunscreen and limit your time in the sun.

??? Learn more about the environmental causes of cancer and exposures you should try to avoid.

??? Understand your genetic risk and family history of cancer and what screening tests may be helpful to you.

How has cancer touched your life? How did you score on our quiz? What are you doing to reduce your risk of cancer??
